International Experience Canada 2024 Application Pool Closing | Canada Immigration
The deadline for submitting applications for the International Experience Canada (IEC) program is October 21. In December of last year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) opened the 2024 pool.
For young people from more than 30 nations with bilateral Youth Mobility Agreements with Canada, there is a work permit program called the IEC. Holders with IEC work permits are granted a set period of years to reside and work in Canada. The goal was to receive 90,000 applications by 2024. It is also possible for Canadians to apply to live and work in any of these nations.
How Does IEC Work?
Youth between the ages of 18 and 35 (or 18 to 30 in other countries) can travel to Canada and obtain invaluable experience working and living overseas by applying for a government work permit.
Prospective candidates who satisfy the fundamental eligibility requirements must apply to the IEC profile pool in order to be taken into consideration, much like Canada’s Express Entry programs. The IRCC will then choose a candidate based on their profile and extend an invitation to apply for a work permit. There is a single pool of qualified applicants for each category and each nation.
Certain nations let applicants participate in the program more than once, under separate categories based on their citizenship. Candidates are not permitted to participate more than their country permits; this differs by country.
The Streams
Candidates may apply to one of three programs under IEC:
1. International Co-op (Internship)
Citizens of qualifying nations can enter Canada under the International Co-ops (Internship) program and serve as interns for Canadian businesses. According to the IRCC, candidates must plan their co-op placement before submitting an IEC application.
2. Young Professionals
Candidates in the Young Professionals stream who have a job offer in hand and want to work for just one employer throughout their stay in Canada will be granted employer-specific work permits, also known as Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)-based work permits.
3. Working Holiday
Candidates who qualify for the Working Holiday stream may be given a work visa. These are Open Work Permits, which give their holders additional location flexibility and a two-year maximum term of employment with the majority of Canadian firms.
A candidate has 20 days from the time they receive and accept an invitation to apply (ITA) to file for a work permit. The deadline will be verified by IRCC on the candidate’s online account.
Arriving in Canada
An IEC participant may also be required to present proof of cash, proof of health insurance, and a ticket for their departure from Canada (or evidence that they have the money to buy one) in addition to their passport and Port of Entry Letter.
The IRCC advises that bank statements obtained no more than one week before to the candidate’s departure for Canada must be presented. The candidate’s bank statement must demonstrate that they have the equivalent of $2,500, or enough money to sustain them for the first three months of their stay in Canada.
Canada-India Recent Fallout
Concerns regarding the future of immigration and trade between India and Canada have been highlighted by the recent fallout between the two countries. Changes in immigration laws and the possibility of commercial relations being disrupted are major concerns as diplomatic tensions rise. Comprehending these modifications is crucial for interested parties maneuvering through this dynamic terrain.
Introduction
Diplomatic relations reached new lows following a shocking accusation this week from Canadian officials that they think Indian government agents were involved in a campaign of murder and extortion in the nation. This rift is now raising concerns about the potential effects it may have on the close trade and immigration ties between both countries.
Canada is home to around 1.7 million people of Indian descent, and bilateral trade is valued at billions of dollars. This kind of relationship collapse is unprecedented, and a lot of what transpires next will depend on their decision-making going ahead.
Though experts warn that this might change and that a cooling relationship between India and Canada could impede future economic growth, they argue that neither nation has applied tariffs or other types of economic retaliation. Uncertainty will be the biggest problem, especially for citizens and businesses.
Canada-India Bilateral Agreement
The two nations have been in and out of talks for a bilateral trade agreement for more than ten years, but Canada put the negotiations on hold last year just before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused India’s Deep Singh Nijjar of being a separatist. Trudeau stated in September 2023 that Canada had solid evidence connecting Indian government agents to the June 2023 shooting death of separatist Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
Soon after, India briefly stopped granting visas to Canadian nationals; however, this action was only temporary since visa processing was resumed in November. Meanwhile, trade relations continued as before. About $8 billion is traded bilaterally, or $6.15 billion, according to the most recent fiscal data released by India’s Trade Ministry.
Canada’s Trade Minister recently reassured business owners that Ottawa does aim to sever commercial connections with India, even though the relationship is still ambiguous. Mr. Lani said businesspeople from both nations should search elsewhere for opportunities. He said people will reconsider their efforts to increase commerce or improve what they already have.
How the rift will affect cross-border travel by people is another major worry. Since 2018, India has been the leading country of origin for international students in Canada, accounting for 4% of the country’s total population. There is a strong human connection between our two nations, and many of his clients are individuals who are keen to relocate to Canada.
Looking Forward
India said earlier this week that it reserves the right to respond with more measures, and the foreign minister of Canada stated that all options, including penalties, are on the table. Trade and immigration might be greatly impacted by the fallout between India and Canada, which would impact both individuals and businesses.
Maintaining close relations between the two countries will depend on adjusting to new policies and looking for opportunities for cooperation as tensions increase.
