India Introduces Fast Track Immigration at Airports to Enhance Traveler Experience
India has expanded its Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveler Program (FTI-TTP) to seven additional airports. This initiative offers quick and secure immigration clearance for Indian citizens and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cardholders.
On January 16, 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the program in Ahmedabad. The newly included airports are:
- Mumbai
- Chennai
- Kolkata
- Bengaluru
- Hyderabad
- Cochin
- Ahmedabad
The FTI-TTP will eventually extend to 21 major airports across the country. This expansion aligns with the government’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ 2047 initiative, which aims to provide world-class immigration facilities.
Background of the FTI-TTP
The program first launched on June 22, 2024, at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. It was designed to make international travel seamless and efficient. The facility is free for Indian citizens and OCI cardholders.
Key Features of the FTI-TTP
- Membership Duration: Valid for five years or until the passport expires, whichever is shorter.
- Eligibility: Open to Indian citizens and OCI cardholders with a passport valid for at least six months.
- Enrollment Process: Applicants must register online at the FTI-TTP portal, complete identity verification via mobile OTP and email, and submit necessary documents.
- Biometric Authentication: This process includes capturing fingerprints and facial images at a Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or designated airports.
How the System Works
Registered passengers will scan their boarding passes at e-gates. The system verifies their passports and authenticates biometrics. Once verified, the e-gate opens automatically for seamless immigration clearance.
Enrollment Steps
- Register online and submit the required documents.
- Schedule an appointment at an FRRO or designated airport for biometric submission.
- Await verification and approval to activate membership.
Benefits of FTI-TTP
The program significantly reduces immigration clearance times for members. This minimizes waiting periods and enhances the overall travel experience. The initiative aligns with India’s broader goals of modernizing infrastructure and simplifying processes for international travelers.
Understanding OCI Cardholders
The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Card scheme is available to Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who were Indian citizens after January 26, 1950. While OCI is not the same as dual citizenship, it offers various benefits. However, it does not grant political rights or privileges under Article 16 of the Constitution.
Conclusion
The expansion of the FTI-TTP marks a significant milestone in improving immigration processes in India. With more airports adopting this system, Indian citizens and OCI cardholders can anticipate a hassle-free travel experience. For further details and enrollment, visit the FTI-TTP portal.
