IMF Fund Internship Program 2027 in USA

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) invites PhD students in economics to apply for its 2027 Fund Internship Program (FIP). This paid, full-time opportunity places selected candidates at IMF Headquarters in Washington, DC, for 10 to 12 weeks, working alongside experienced economists on research and policy questions affecting the IMF’s 191 member countries.

What the Program Offers

Selected interns receive competitive compensation while working full-time (40 hours per week) from 7 June to 27 August 2027. The program provides direct exposure to the IMF’s international policy environment, allowing participants to apply economic theory and quantitative research methods to real-world challenges. Interns may present research findings to IMF staff, and some work may contribute to internal IMF publications.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting economic research on policy-relevant questions
  • Applying quantitative research methods to practical issues
  • Strengthening analytical, research, and computer skills
  • Building professional networks with IMF economists
  • Contributing to research with relevance for member countries

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet specific criteria to qualify:

  • Be within one to two years of completing a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field
  • Remain enrolled as a student at the time of the internship
  • Return to academic studies after completing the internship
  • Demonstrate strong academic performance with excellent analytical and quantitative skills
  • Be under 32 years old when the internship begins in June 2027
  • Demonstrate excellent written and spoken English

The only exception to the age requirement is for time spent in mandatory military service. Previous FIP participants cannot reapply.

Application Requirements

Submit your application online through the IMF careers portal. Required documents include:

  • Curriculum Vitae or resume
  • Statement of Interest or cover letter explaining your motivation
  • Proof of current student status and academic performance (transcript or university letter)
  • Completed technical questionnaire

Incomplete applications will not receive consideration.

Practical Considerations

Interns arrange and finance their own accommodation, though the IMF provides guidance during onboarding. International applicants not authorized to work in the United States require a G4 visa, for which the IMF provides supporting documentation.
