IELTS vs TOEFL: Which One Is Better? (Admission & Visa)

Proving your proficiency in the English language is a necessary procedure for your visa application or admission into a college. Getting a good score portrays your  adaptability in a foreign country and also bridges the communication gap between two different cultures. In proving your proficiency in the English language, TOEFL and IELTS are the most accepted test worldwide. This article will give a breakdown of what these two tests entails.

What is the IELTS?

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English language proficiency exam which is jointly owned by the British Council and IDP. The test comes in two variations that is the IELTS Academic and the IELTS General Training. The IELTS academic is for those who want to pursue a higher education or profession whereas the IELTS General Training is for those who are travelling for work experience.

IELTS format

The duration for this exams is 2 hours 45 minutes and it is divided into four sections. Each section gives you a score of 9 marks therefore your total score will be an average of all four sections. The IELTS divides the days of writing the test for two days.

Sections of the IELTS

The IELTS is divided into four sections. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing.

1 . To begin with, Listening

Four Recorded conversations are played. Two of them I in a social setting while the other two are in an educational setting. After each recording, there are 10 questions that follows to test your understanding of the conversations that were played. The questions range from multiple choice to diagram and also completing sentences.

2 .  Secondly, Reading

For the reading session you are given three paragraphs to read these paragraphs are excepts from text books, journals and newspapers. They come in different styles be it narrative,  descriptive or argumentative. Like the listening, there is a round of follow up questions

3 . Also, Writing

This comes in two forms. The first test is to see your capabilities  in comprehending visual representation of data. Candidates are expected to write a minimum of 150 words and are normally advised to not spend more than 30 minutes writing. The other is an argumentative essay with a minimum of 250 words. This tests unlike the first one, will test the candidates clarity in answering the question, range of vocabulary and spellings.

4 . Finally, Speaking

You have a face to face interview with your examiner. The goal here is to be grammatically correct and get your point across. There is a casual conversation on any topic which will prove that you can carry a conversation in real life.

What is TOEFL?

It is similar to the IELTS however, all aspects of the test are written in one day. It also has four sections, writing, reading, speaking and listening.
