How To Protect Your MTN Mobile Money Against Fraudsters
The emergence of Mobile money has brought convenience to many business owners. Wherever you are in the country you can receive and send money to your suppliers and loved ones.
Although it has brought ease to many, there are some challenges on this platform. Due to the increasing number of people patronizing the platform, there have been some fraudulent activities by some unscrupulous individuals. These activities have caused many to be duped of their hard-earned money.
As long as fraudsters continue to see an opportunity to Scam others, one can also avoid being duped by staying vigilant.
WAYS TO STAY SAFE FROM MOBILE MONEY FRAUDSTERS
1 . Change your Momo PIN regularly
One way anyone can protect themselves is by changing their PIN from time to time. Make sure that your pin is not something anyone can guess. You should avoid using birthdays and dates that are memorable to you.
Your PIN is the gateway to your mobile wallet therefore you need to guard it with all diligence. When you suspect someone has seen your PIN, it is advisable to change your PIN. You can change it every 2 months or every quarter.
2 . Do not click on suspicious links offering you free data and airtime online.
Avoid clicking on links that offer you airtime. Most of such links will have you fill out forms with your name, other details, and phone number. These pieces of information are stored on the website and later your number is used to defraud you.
3 . Wait for confirmation
Anytime you deposit money at any MTN mobile money merchant shop, ensure that you receive a text to confirm that the money has hit your account before leaving. The text received should be from Mobile Money and not somebody’s phone number. Also when you are withdrawing money from a merchant, confirm with the Momo merchant if that is their name that is displayed on your phone before you enter your PIN.
4 . Don’t hand your phone to any Mobile Money merchant for transactions.
Never give your mobile money to any agent to do a transaction on your behalf. You expose yourself to fraud if you give your phone to an agent to aid you with your transaction.
5 . Report any person or activity you suspect to be fraudulent.
Anytime you notice fraudulent activity, don’t hesitate to report it. You can call the MTN Call Centre or visit any of their customer service centers to lodge a complaint. In MTN’s own words make sure you don’t be a Mugu to these fraudsters.
