How to apply for a student permit through the Student Direct Stream
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says that SDS is a way to speed up the handling of student permit (or student visa) applications for people who want to go to school in Canada. Through the Student Direct Stream, people from certain countries can apply for a study permit and have it completed in 20 calendar days.
To ensure faster working, you must:
- Give your biometrics as soon as you can, and
- make sure you meet all the standards to be eligible.
A study permit is not the same as a visa. It doesn’t let you enter Canada. To get into Canada, you might also need a visitor visa or electronic travel permission (eTA). Once your study permit is accepted, the Government will send you a study permit approval letter and, if needed, an entry visa that lets you travel to Canada.
To apply the Student Direct Stream, you must do the following:
- Live in Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, or Vietnam.
- Have a DLI acceptance letter after high school. Provincial or territorial governments authorize DLIs to host overseas students. All Canadian elementary and middle schools are DLIs. Check this list for your post-high school choice.
- When you apply, you must be living outside of Canada.
- Have proof that you’ve paid for your first year of college. Some examples of acceptable proof are
- a receipt from your DLI
- an official letter from the DLI saying that school fees have been paid;
- A receipt from your bank that shows you have paid your school fees to the DLI; or
- Proof that the amount of the tuition fee has been put into a storage account at the DLI and will be used to pay the tuition bill in the future.
- Have a $10,000 Canadian Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
- Have a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) if you want to study in Quebec. Your school can tell you everything you need to know about how to fill out the CAQ.
- If you need to, you should see a doctor. This is to make sure you can’t be turned away because of your health. You may need a medical exam if:
- You lived or traveled in certain countries or territories for six months or more in the year before you moved to Canada;
- You plan to study or work in healthcare, primary/secondary education, or child or adult care;
- Get a police Report.
- Have your most current transcript(s) from high school or college.
- Have a language test result that shows:
- A score of 6.0 or better on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in each skill (reading, writing, speaking, and listening); or
- A Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) score that is equal to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 in each skill (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
Depending on where you’re applying from, you may also need to bring other papers. Make sure you send in all the papers that the visa office in your country needs.
