GSM Visas Points Test Set for Big Changes & Open for Submissions

A points exam must be passed by candidates for Australian General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas, which include Subclasses 189, 190, and 491. Getting an invitation to apply for a visa depends on meeting these requirements.

Upcoming Changes and Submissions

According to a recent study, the existing points test is ineffective at selecting individuals who have the greatest potential to make long-term contributions to Australia. The GSM points test will therefore be revised as a result. This review is being led by the Australian National University, and submissions are accepted through May 24, 2024.

Recent Modifications and Future Directions

Since July 2022, the test has undergone modifications that include a reduction in the maximum age for applicants, the addition of a partner skill points category, and the adjustment of points for certain visa nominations and area studies. The upcoming review intends to further improve the selection criteria, possibly placing more emphasis on elements like age, English language ability, and Australian job experience.

With this revision, the point system will be more effectively used to choose immigrants who are most qualified to fill jobs in Australia.

Western Australia’s doors are temporarily closed to skilled migrants as of February 2, 2024. Additionally, for the 2023–24 program year, all of the slots allotted for Visa Subclasses 190 and 491 under the General Skilled Migration program are filled.

What does this mean for you?

Well, if you filed before February 2nd, then feel free to relax; your application will be assessed under the current standards. Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications received, processing delays are to be expected. If you want to apply, please note that no new submissions will be accepted at this time.

That being said, you are welcome to apply for the upcoming program year, which is expected to begin in July. Hold onto your hope! Make sure to submit it in the next program year. Here’s an actionable plan:

  • Wait and reapply first. Watch for the next program year’s opening and get ready to submit your application on time.
  • Second, look into other options. Examine other Australian states for skilled migration prospects or alternative visa categories as migration pathways.
  • Lastly, get advice. Seek advice from qualified migration consultants to simplify the difficult process according to your circumstances.

Summary

The skilled migration program in Western Australia is not accepting new applicants until the following program year. Candidates who may experience delays in processing will be informed, and prospective candidates should reevaluate their migration objectives by looking into alternate routes and expert advice.
