UK Government to ease visa rules for international workers.
To address the lack of workers within the construction industry, the government intends to relax the regulations around UK visas. The relaxation of the UK Visa rule will make it easier for international construction workers to migrate to the UK and fill the labor market gaps in specific industries.
Visa rules will be relaxed specifically for plumbers, bricklayers, carpenters, plasterers, and roofers. This aims to fill the gaps in the construction industry workforce to boost economic growth. However, despite the efforts of numerous industry stakeholders, the restrictions will not be relaxed for those who work in the hospitality sector.
The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), assigned the task of looking into the shortage occupation list in September, will publish the new guidelines soon. Furthermore, Home Secretary Suella Braverman will sign off on the guidelines. Sources confirm that all parties have agreed to the updates.
Additionally, the new rules will be announced at the same time when Chancellor Jeremy Hunt puts forward his budget.

What’s important to note is that the new UK rules are a part of the government’s strategies. These strategies set to deal with the chronic labor shortages in the UK. These shortages are known to have occurred because of Brexit and reduced economic activity among the British people.
Also, the shortage occupation list highlights the skilled jobs for which the UK doesn’t have enough workers. It also enables employers to recruit international workers without meeting visa charges and higher salary thresholds.

MAC advised the government to include all care workers in the list, but the Ministers have been reluctant towards this recommendation. Currently, the committee conducts a detailed assessment for evidence on the shortage occupation list expected to report its findings later this year.
Also, the hospitality industry calls for the addition of jobs in the sector in the shortage occupation list. This is because the industry continues to find it difficult to fill vacancies after a significant reduction in European workers.
The Chief Executive of UK Hospitality, Kate Nicholls, confirmed that the existing labor shortages in the industry continue to affect the hospitality business negatively. As a result, businesses cut their hours while incurring losses of billions.
She further added that the hospitality industry currently faces a two-thirds higher shortage of labor than it did before the pandemic. As a result, there are no sufficient workers to fill all the job vacancies, even though the industry is trying its best to recruit local workers, including economically inactive ones.
She feels disappointed that MAC did not add chefs back to the shortage occupation list after removing them in April 2021. Moreover, she wants MAC to conduct a thorough review for a long-term inquiry so the economy can get access to all the skills needed to run smoothly.
