Global Health Emerging Scholars Fellowship 2027/28

Applications are open for the Global Health Emerging Scholars Fellowship. NIH’s Fogarty International Center funds this 12-month research training program. Four US universities manage the consortium: Stanford, Arizona, Berkeley, and Yale. Fellows conduct mentored global health research at partner sites abroad.

About the Fellowship

This fellowship trains new health researchers through direct field experience. Fellows work at collaborating institutions across numerous developing countries. A dedicated mentorship team supervises every research project closely. Full-time dedication is required; outside employment isn’t permitted.

What Fellows Receive

Fellows receive a stipend set at standard NIH scale rates. Health insurance and travel costs are covered throughout the year. Roughly $15,000 in dedicated research funding supports project work. All fellows attend a week-long NIH orientation in Washington, DC.

Who Can Apply

US postdocs within five years of their doctoral degree may apply. US pre-doctoral students at any American institution are also eligible. LMIC postdocs from partner institutions can apply through the same process. A master’s degree alone doesn’t satisfy the postdoctoral requirement.

Required Materials

Applicants must identify one primary US mentor and one LMIC mentor. Both mentors must already be part of the GHES program. Only one application per candidate will be considered for review.
