Getting PR In Australia Relative To Other Countries | Australia Immigration Guide

People seek permanent residence (PR) in a foreign nation for a variety of reasons. It may be a necessity for some, but for others, it is an opportunity to live in a new nation and embrace a new culture and way of life.

But how difficult is it to immigrate and obtain permanent residency in a foreign country? Every country has its own set of procedures and laws for assessing eligibility for permanent residence (PR) and the time it takes from application to approval. Similarly, whether permanent residence is easy or difficult to obtain depends on the country.

Obtaining PR in Australia

Australia is regarded as one of the easiest countries to obtain permanent residency in. You must apply for and be granted a permanent visa to become a permanent resident in Australia. Permanent visas provide an indefinite stay in Australia.

The three most prevalent routes to permanent residence are:

A family-stream permanent visa

  • For Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia, or qualified New Zealand nationals’ wives, partners, children, parents, or dependent relations
  • For children who have been or are in the process of being adopted outside of Australia
  • Caregivers who need to go to Australia in order to offer long-term care for an approved relative

A work-stream permanent visa

  • For skilled workers sponsored by an Australian company to work in Australia or with skills that meet a labor need
  • For skilled workers who apply independently and are invited based on a points test to determine eligibility.

A business or investor stream permanent visa

  • For entrepreneurs, investors, and business owners who want to continue operating in Australia while on a provisional visa.

You must meet eligibility conditions while applying for a permanent visa.

How Does Obtaining PR in Australia Differ From Other Countries Around the World?

PR in Australia

In general, obtaining permanent residency in Australia is not difficult if you meet all of the requirements of the visa you are applying for. However, in many nations around the world, obtaining PR is as simple as winning the lottery.

Thailand

Thailand is a popular destination for individuals seeking permanent residency, but it is also quite tough to get. Also, Thailand only issues 100 permanent residency permits per nation each year, and this limit is rigidly enforced; therefore, applicants’ prospects of obtaining PR in Thailand are quite slim. If you are fortunate enough to be given a PR permit, you can apply for Thai citizenship after five years of continuous residency in Thailand.

Japan

Applicants who have lived in Japan for 10 years on any sort of visa may be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Japan. You may also be eligible if you have worked as a highly skilled professional in Japan for a specified amount of time and earned enough points under Japan’s Highly Skilled Professional System.

Marrying a Japanese citizen or permanent resident is another route to obtaining permanent residency; however, you must have been married for at least three years and resided in Japan for at least one year before applying for permanent residence.

Liechtenstein

Because Liechtenstein has no desire to increase its population through immigration, obtaining permanent residence is nearly impossible. Members of Austria and Switzerland must dwell in Liechtenstein for a minimum of five years before being awarded permanent residence, whereas members of the rest of the EU must reside in the kingdom for a minimum of ten years. Non-EU citizens are not permitted to enter.

Applicants must hold the status of official employees to secure permanent residence; nevertheless, finding a job opportunity in Liechtenstein is quite difficult.

Permanent residence by marriage is an option, but it is a lengthy and costly process that requires proof of three years of cohabitation between spouses.

United States of America

Permanent residence (green card) applicants in the United States must meet the following requirements:

  • Having spent at least five years in the United States. Spouses of US citizens are only required to have lived in the US for three years.
  • Be morally decent and physically fit.
  • Understand US history and government.
  • You should be able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Before applying, you must have lived in the USIC district or state for at least three months.

Applicants have the option of applying for permanent residency through the preference system, which gives priority to family members of US citizens who are seeking permanent residence in the US. Applicants also have the option of applying for permanent residency through work sponsorship, marriage to an American citizen, or seeking asylum.

Although there are many different ways to submit an application for permanent residency, the number of people who are granted a green card each year is capped at a certain amount. Because of this limit, it is possible that some applicants will have to wait as long as twenty years before they can obtain permanent residence.

Mexico

Mexico is regarded as one of the most difficult countries to obtain permanent residency in. You can apply to become a permanent resident of Mexico if you meet one of the following requirements:

  • You have relatives in Mexico.
  • You have a job in Mexico.
  • You will be studying at a Mexican educational institution.
  • You want to retire in Mexico and have enough money.
  • You have resided in Mexico for four years in a row and thereby qualify for permanent residence.
