GES Releases 2025-26 Basic School Academic Calendar

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the official academic calendar for the 2025-26 academic year, detailing essential dates and schedules for basic schools nationwide.

The Official Communiqué

The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform all Basic School heads, teachers, learners, and stakeholders of the approved 2025/2026 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools (Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools). Details of the calendar are as follows:

FIRST TERM (15 WEEKS)
REOPENING 2ND SEPTEMBER, 2025
CLOSING 18TH DECEMBER, 2025
VACATION 19TH DECEMBER, 2025
MID-TERM BREAK 31ST OCTOBER – 3RD NOVEMBER, 2025 (2 DAYS)
SECOND TERM (12 WEEKS)
REOPENING 8TH JANUARY, 2026
CLOSING 1ST APRIL, 2026
VACATION 2ND APRIL 2026 – 20TH APRIL 2026
THIRD TERM (13 WEEKS)
REOPENING 21ST APRIL, 2026
CLOSING 23RD JULY, 2026
VACATION 24TH JULY 2026

BASIC EDUCATION CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (BECE)

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has been scheduled to take place from 4th May to 11th May, 2026.

GES wishes to remind all stakeholders that public holidays within the academic year are to be observed accordingly. In addition, a two-day mid-term break will be observed in each term for all basic schools. All heads of schools, teachers, parents, and guardians are urged to take note of these dates and ensure adequate preparation for a smooth and effective academic year.

Management also wishes to thank all school heads, teachers, parents, students, and all stakeholders for the dedication and hard work in ensuring a successful 2024/2025 academic year, which ends on Thursday, 24th July, 2025.

About Ghana Education Service

NRCD 247 established the Ghana Education Service (GES) in 1974 as part of Ghana’s Public Service. NRCD 252, 357, and SMCD 63 altered it. Parliament’s Acts 506 (1994) and 778 (2008) changed these laws under Ghana’s fourth Republican Constitution. The fifteen-member GES Council runs the GES.

Ghana Education Service aspires to develop an enabling atmosphere in all educational institutions and management positions that would promote effective teaching and learning, as well as management efficiency, in order to achieve the Service’s goals.

Mission Statement

To ensure that all Ghanaian children of school-going age receive inclusive and equitable quality formal education and training through effective and efficient resource management, with education delivery tailored to the nation’s manpower needs.

Mandate of the GES

GES is in charge of implementing approved national pre-tertiary educational policies and programs to ensure that all Ghanaian children of school age, regardless of tribe, gender, disability, religious or political affiliation, receive an inclusive and equitable quality formal education.
