Germany to Streamlines Immigration for Skilled Workers
Germany is about to enact a new law that will make it simpler for qualified workers, especially non-EU ones, to move there.
The administration is confident that the long-awaited immigration changes will change Germany after coalition parties reached an agreement.
At a Monday news conference, Katja Mast of the Social Democratic Party, which governs with the Free Democrats and Greens, said these measures are urgently needed to modernize Germany’s immigration laws. “And we’ll do it this week,” she continued. Her supporters were Free Democrats Johannes Vogel and Greens Irene Mihalic.
Motivated by Labor Shortages, Germany Takes Action
Labor shortages plague Europe’s greatest economy. The employment ministry reported a record high of around two million job vacancies in 2022.
The German government published a proposed legislation in late March to address this serious issue, which is likely to raise non-EU worker numbers by 60,000 annually.
Revised Immigration Pathways Offered to Foreign Workers
Under the proposed law, foreign employees can enter Germany in three ways, depending on their qualifications. For those who can find work in the country but don’t have a job offer, a new “opportunity card” will be issued.
This new card will be based on qualifications, language skills, employment experience, age, and ties to Germany.
Germany’s Focus on Securing Skilled Labor Base
In March, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government unveiled a wide range of reforms aimed at immigration, job training, and encouraging people to come from outside the EU.
Labor Minister Hubertus Heil said that protecting Germany’s skilled labor base is important and will continue to be one of the country’s most important economic jobs for the next few decades.
Multiple Pathways for Foreign Workers
Germany has set up three different ways for foreign workers to enter the country to make the immigration process easier and smoother:
- The first method requires a German-accepted professional or university degree and a work offer.
- The second option demands a degree or vocational training and two years of related work experience.
- The third and last option, the “opportunity card,” is for those who can find a job but don’t. Education, language abilities, work experience, ties to Germany, and age determine this path.
Bottomline
These immigration reforms will bring in smart people from around the world and build a strong labor market to support Germany’s booming economy.
With these improvements, Germany will become a top destination for qualified workers looking for new opportunities and solve its pressing labor shortage issues.
