German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) PhD Scholarship 2025
The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) has announced the opening of its prestigious PhD Scholarship Programme, inviting applications for the autumn intake of 2025. This programme is designed for early-career researchers who are dedicated to advancing the fields of environmental preservation and nature conservation.

Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must fulfill the subsequent criteria:
- Possess an above-average qualification (minimum mark: “good” or “very good”; for law graduates, at least “fully satisfactory”).
- The doctoral project should primarily take place at a German university and must not have commenced. Projects where the applicant has been engaged in the subject for over a year after graduation are not eligible.
- The research subject must tackle urgent environmental protection or nature conservation problems and propose sustainable solutions, concentrating on Germany or global issues pertinent to Germany.
- Lastly, fluency in the German language is necessary since all application materials must be provided in German.
We invite applications from every academic field, such as natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, economics, and law. Also, collaborative research across different fields is strongly supported.
DBU PhD Scholarship Benefits
The DBU PhD Scholarship provides financial assistance and professional guidance to exceptionally driven doctoral candidates engaged in groundbreaking environmental studies.
- Monthly Allowance: €1,600
- Material Allowance: €210 each month, with extra contributions allowed in special circumstances.

Total Scholarships Available: Annually, DBU grants as many as 50 scholarships to exceptional applicants.

Applications should be submitted through DBU’s online platform
Application forms, composed in German, need to have all necessary documents attached. Moreover, Each scientific supervisor or working group has to submit only one application per round.
