Job Description

Project: Ghana E-WASH
Location: Tamale with occasional travels to other E-WASH project sites
Reports To: Deputy Chief of Party (Ghana), and the Senior Director for Gender Equality, Youth, and Social Inclusion (Washington, D.C.)
Duration: One Year Contract- Anticipated to be renewable on annual basis

Global Communities is seeking a full-time Gender and Youth Specialist to lead the integration of gender and positive youth development (PYD) approaches into its 5-year “Enhancing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (E-WASH)” program in northern Ghana funded by USAID.

The Specialist will spearhead the gender and inclusion analysis and actively participate in program design, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and evaluation activities.

This will include capacity building and technical assistance to government, civil society, and community stakeholders on gender, PYD, and WASH, including how to enhance governance and planning for WASH service delivery, strengthen sustainable WASH financing, improve private sector engagement, and accelerate the adoption of convenient and safe WASH behaviors from the gender and youth perspectives.

Job Summary / Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and assistance to the project to ensure effective integration of gender and PYD approaches into program interventions focused on WASH
  • Develop tools for and oversee gender/youth analyses and evaluations
  • Lead the development of and support the implementation of gender, PYD, and GBV mitigation strategies
  • Track the latest global and regional evidence on gender-responsive WASH and ensure that project strategies are evidence-based
  • Support gender-balanced and inclusive outreach and stakeholder engagement strategies (men and boys, religious leaders, community leaders, marginalized groups and organizations representing them)
  • Coordinate with local and national gender and youth stakeholders (experts, practitioners, organizations, and government entities)
  • Lead staff trainings (Gender 101, GBV, PYD, gender integration, diversity and inclusion) and coordinate other related learning opportunities
  • Share existing and develop tailored tools, frameworks, and resources to enable better integration of gender and PYD across all project components
  • Review program documents for gender and youth sensitivity (including research design, M&E tools, assessments, annual work plans, programmatic reports, and communication materials)
  • Speak on behalf of the program/organization on gender and youth issues
  • Track and report against gender and youth indicators and gender gaps/constraints identified in the gender analysis; ensure that program data is disaggregated at minimum by gender and age
  • Identify successful gender and PYD practices in the project that can be showcased in publications, communication materials, and conferences
  • Assist the program team in adapting gender and PYD interventions and strategies when needed
  • Prepare communications materials that highlight the program’s gender equality and PYD approaches, successes, and lessons learnt
  • Support organization-wide standard setting and information sharing by participating in Global Communities’ gender and youth working groups/teams and special initiatives.

Required Skills or Experience

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in one or more of these related social science disciplines: youth development, gender & community development, women & gender studies, etc.
  • A passion and commitment to feminist values, human rights, and advancing the status of women and youth
  • Experience and demonstrated results in gender integration in accordance with global best practices; knowledge of relevant USAID policies and requirements a plus
  • Working knowledge of PYD approaches and the principles of diversity and inclusion
  • Knowledge of and experience with the design, management, and implementation of WASH programming
  • Experience in developing and facilitating training
  • Experience in conducting gender analyses and developing gender strategies
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and understanding of the socio-economic and political situation in northern Ghana
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work well with others, including project staff, subcontractors, consultants, and recipients of assistance
  • Ability to travel as needed
