More than 170 countries throughout the world do not require visas for US residents to visit. Due to this, several locations now grant holders of US permanent residency permits the same benefit (Green Card).
With a Green Card, you may be able to go to a number of nations that you might otherwise be unable to. Just two of them are Canada and Mexico.
CAN ALL GREEN CARD HOLDERS TRAVEL ABROAD WITHOUT A VISA?
Only nations that have granted US Green Card holders the same privileges as US citizens are eligible for foreign travel with this document. In other words, if a country’s visa policy states that US permanent residents and citizens are free from requiring visas.
However, when you travel, the majority of nations will initially consider your nationality (i.e., your passport). If you ordinarily require a visa to enter a country, you will still require a visa sometimes if you hold a Green Card.
WHERE CAN GREEN CARD HOLDERS TRAVEL WITHOUT A VISA?
The following nations allow Green Card holders to gain entry without a visa:
- Canada
- Mexico
- Costa Rica
- Georgia
- Singapore
- Peru
- The British Virgin Island
- The Balkans
- Aruba and Curacao
Please be aware that even if you have a Green Card, you could still be refused entry at the border crossings of any of the nations listed above. Be sure to verify with a US embassy first.
CAN GREEN CARD HOLDERS TRAVEL TO EUROPE WITHOUT A VISA?
Your passport and nationality will have a major impact on it. However, if you typically need a visa, a Green Card alone won’t grant you visa-free travel to the majority of European countries.
Unless you are included on the visa-exemptions list, you cannot access the majority of EU countries with just your US Green Card. Outside of the EU, Green Card holders don’t need a visa to visit some European nations.
DO GREEN CARD HOLDERS NEED VISAS FOR UK?
They do, indeed. Even if you have a Green Card, you must apply for a visa if you would typically need one to enter the UK. Sadly, a Green Card does not grant entry into the UK or the EU.
CAN I TRAVEL WITH A GREEN CARD AND NO PASSPORT?
Most likely not. You won’t be able to travel abroad if you don’t have a passport. When you enter or leave a nation, whether, by air or land, the immigration officers there will ask to see your passport and, if necessary, a visa or residence permit.
