In addition to working as a team to establish a welcoming and relevant environment for renters and visitors, the Front Desk Support Worker is responsible for offering a cordial and courteous reception service. Operating within a feminist framework that combines knowledge of the causes and effects of trauma, mental health, and oppression with a trained response.

  • Salary: $36,644 per annum (Prorated) (L5) plus comprehensive benefits

About Ywca Toronto-Ywca Elm Centre

Three distinct resident groups are served by the 300 permanent housing units at the YWCA Elm Centre: 165 affordable rental units for women, 50 units for Indigenous women, gender nonconforming individuals, and their families, and 85 supportive units for women and gender nonconforming individuals experiencing mental health issues or co-occurring mental health and drug use issues.

The Elm Community Engagement Team provides services and activities to all residents, with a focus on fostering community capacity, housing stability, and health promotion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Renters and guests should get a cordial and helpful welcome, and you should collaborate as a team to create a memorable environment.
  • Working within a feminist framework that calls for deft handling of and comprehension of the processes and effects of mental illness, trauma, and oppression
  • Schedule visits to the Women’s College Clinic at Elm; schedule tenant reservations at Nancy’s Auditorium, Jack Layton Lounge, and Winona Community Lounge.
  • Help in the orientation process for new tenants to make sure they are comfortable with and understand the community, personnel, and services.
  • Using the on-call procedures (i.e., directors, property services, and housing support program staff), handle on-site crises
  • Take corrective action and make sure the appropriate people are informed of any hazards when responding to possible safety problems.
  • The supervisor is notified of any disruptions, vandalism, or other emergencies, and an incident record is produced as appropriate.
  • Liaison with relevant staff members, including property services, community engagement staff, and housing workers.

Qualifications

  • Obtaining a bachelor’s degree from a university in a relevant field (social work, for instance) (equivalency cases will be reviewed)
  • One to three years of comparable experience working in assisted living
  • An advantage is a qualification from the Toronto Hostel Training Centre.
  • Prior work experience in a residential setting and familiarity with the Residential Tenancies Act are advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills, both in writing and verbally, along with strong interpersonal abilities
  • Proficiency and familiarity in managing emergencies and reducing tensions
  • Working experience with diverse individuals and groups, such as those with different cultural backgrounds, genders, abilities, religions, races, sexual orientations, and so forth; capacity to politely and professionally engage with a diversified group of women, their families, and guests in a supportive housing environment
  • Show that you are knowledgeable and experienced in working with women who have experienced abuse or trauma, unstable housing, poverty, mental health issues, or co-occurring addictions.
  • Working knowledge and proficiency with trauma-informed care and an anti-oppression framework
  • Knowledge of the harm reduction framework
  • Ability to follow all safety rules and guidelines at work and react suitably in an emergency or other safety-related situation
  • Needs to be meticulous, detail-oriented, and capable of working under pressure.
  • Proficiency in a second language and familiarity with security operating systems are advantages.
  • WHMIS training completion is beneficial.
