Fellowships In USA: Mandela Washington Readers Fellowships 2025

The U.S. Department of State and IREX are pleased to announce the invitation for academic, professional, and regional experts to evaluate and assess applications for the 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. During the first nine-year period, the Fellowship has received a total of around 434,000 applications from 49 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, resulting in the allocation of 7,200 Fellow positions.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, which is the primary initiative of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), enables young leaders from Africa to come to the United States to engage in academic coursework and get training in leadership. This program promotes cooperation among Fellows and U.S. residents, stimulating economic development and prosperity, reinforcing democratic government, and improving peace and security in Africa and the United States.

During the summer of 2025, a maximum of 700 young leaders will take part in a comprehensive executive-style program. This program aims to develop their talents and enable them to become leaders in their particular sectors and communities.

Regarding the fellowship

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the primary program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Since 2014, around 6,500 young leaders from all countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have taken part in the Fellowship. The Fellows, aged 25 to 35, are distinguished leaders with proven track records of fostering innovation and driving positive change in their communities and nations.

Fellowship Components

Institutes focused on developing leadership skills and abilities.

Participants engage in a Common Leadership Curriculum exercise.
During the Fellowship, the participants engage in six-week Leadership Institutes, where they study Business, Civic Engagement, or Public Management. These institutes are hosted by schools or universities in the United States. Across the Institutes, Fellows enhance local U.S. communities by exchanging and implementing optimal methodologies.

Professional Development Experiences (PDEs)

Applicants have the chance to collaborate with private, public, and non-profit organizations for a maximum of six weeks. This can be done either right after the Summit as part of their Fellowship or at a later time as Alumni. Both Fellows and Hosts derive advantages from engaging in discussions about common themes and challenges in their respective industries, expanding their viewpoints, and positioning U.S. firms for global involvement.

Mutual exchanges

American individuals have the chance to apply for the implementation of projects in sub-Saharan African nations in order to sustain collaborative efforts with Fellowship Alumni in the region. The purpose of these collaborations and professional connections is to establish enduring relationships, broaden markets and networks, and enhance mutual comprehension.

Academic Level for Mandela Washington Readers Fellowship:

The Mandela Washington Readers Fellowships for the year 2025 are currently open for individuals who wish to pursue fellowship-level studies at universities in the United States.

Advantages of the Mandela Washington Readers Fellowship:

  • Approximately 50 submissions will be assessed by readers using predetermined standards and a scoring system. This volunteer opportunity provides a chance for professionals and students pursuing a degree to enhance their professional skills and strengthen their résumé.
  • As a Reader, you will be exposed to the difficulties and possible solutions in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the fundamental processes in international and higher education. Prospective candidates must fill out the Reader Application form by September 1, 2024.
  • The reading session commences in mid-September and extends until early November 2024. Each application requires approximately 5 to 10 minutes to peruse. Only the chosen recipients will get communication in September 2024.

Eligible Nationalities for the Mandela Washington Readers Fellowship:

  • Students from African countries are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Duties and designated time for reading

  • Readers will be tasked with assessing around 50 applications using established criteria and a grading methodology. This volunteer opportunity offers professionals and degree-seeking individuals a valuable chance to enhance their professional growth and strengthen their résumé. Readers will be exposed to the difficulties and possible solutions in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the main procedures in international and higher education.
  • Prospective candidates can submit their application by filling out the Reader Application form by September 1, 2024. The reading period for the year 2024 will commence in mid-September and conclude in early November. Each application requires approximately 5 to 10 minutes to peruse. Requirements for Mandela Washington Readers Fellowship:

  • The target audience for this text consists of scholars and/or professionals who possess specialized knowledge in one or more of the Fellowship’s theme domains (business, civic engagement, or public management).
  • Prior experience in Africa or with sub-Saharan African matters is preferred.
  • Eligibility is limited to workers of the U.S. Government.
  • Individuals who have previously participated in the Fellowship program are eligible.
  • Individuals applying for the 2024 Fellowship are disqualified from serving as readers.

Procedure for Applying to the Mandela Washington Readers Fellowship:

  • Submit an application to become a Reader
  • The application for the Reader post is currently available. Please ensure that you fill out the Reader Application form no later than September 1, 2024.

Timeline of Selection

  • Deadline for applications: September 1, 2024
  • Reading period: From mid-September to early November 2024
  • Review Period: The evaluation of applications will take place in September 2024.
  • Contact information for a specific group of readers: Expected to be available in September 2024.
