POSITION: Area Manager

AECI is seeking an experienced Area Manager to lead our Mining Services business within a designated region. If you have a background in mining engineering and a proven track record in middle management, this opportunity offers the perfect platform to make a significant impact.

Your Mission: Drive Regional Success

You will manage the Mining Services business within your designated region by coordinating input resources for explosives delivery in line with QOTIF principles. You will facilitate specialized mining and blast engineering expertise while overseeing all elements of the sales and marketing function. Additionally, you will perform annual business planning and ensure efficient management of finances, employees, and assets. Your ultimate goal: accomplish the organization’s objectives while developing long term relationships with assigned customers.

Key Responsibilities

Your role spans leadership, customer management, financial oversight, and operational excellence. Here is what you will tackle:

Leadership & Strategy

  • You will contribute to and implement the management and leadership function of Mining Services. Accountable for long term growth and profitability, you will lead AECI’s strategic thrust into the region.
  • Actively promoting and managing the company’s vision and values requires a hands on approach to planning, leading, organizing, and controlling regional operations.

Business Development & Customer Management

  • You will assist in securing new business developments while maintaining a dominant position within this strategically vital region.
  • Managing existing supply contracts, compiling tenders for new business, and contributing to annual price negotiations for regional customers falls squarely in your domain.
  • Communicating regularly with internal and external customers through visits and reviews ensures sound business relations and continuous operations.

Financial & Operational Accountability

  • You will take accountability for preparing and delivering the defined region’s sales, profit, operating, and fixed costs budgets to meet set objectives.
  • Effectively managing customer stakeholder stock and exercising firm control over company products and assets optimizes returns.

Safety, Compliance & Excellence

  • Actively promoting and managing SHE and Quality policies, systems, and controls ensures compliance with AECI operational excellence standards and relevant legislative bodies.
  • Ensuring the timely and successful delivery of AECI solutions according to customer needs and objectives means meeting contractual obligations relating to OTIF for product and service delivery.

People Development & Reporting

  • You will manage, lead, and develop direct reports’ performance, career growth, and development in collaboration with the human capital training department.
  • Communicating timely and clearly to internal and external stakeholders about any potential breach of contract allows for instant action and remedy.
  • Forecasting and tracking key account metrics keeps performance visible and actionable.

What You Bring to the Role

We are looking for a candidate with deep technical knowledge, extensive experience, and strong leadership capabilities. Here is what you need:

Knowledge & Experience

  • A minimum of a University degree or equivalent in a technical field, preferably Mining Engineering.
  • At least 10 years of working experience in open pit mining or underground operations at the middle management level.
  • A professional or statutory qualification as an explosives engineer or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of blast performance assessment techniques and associated equipment.
  • Understanding of underground mining activities and dangerous working environments.
  • Knowledge of mine planning and operations including Drill and Blast.
  • Familiarity with mining equipment selection and performance.
  • An in depth understanding of legislation applicable to the industry.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body.

Skills & Competencies

  • In depth working knowledge of financial and strategic management concepts and accounting practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong customer relationship abilities at all levels of management.
  • Good sales and marketing skills with experience to back them up.
  • Excellent negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with computer and engineering software applicable to the mining industry.
  • Problem solving and leadership skills with a strong team spirit.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work with minimal supervision.
  • Sound financial management and good business acumen.
  • Ability to think strategically and conceptually while managing operational realities.
