Vision Action, formerly Vision Aid Overseas, is a UK-based charity dedicated to poverty alleviation through improved access to eye care services in Africa’s low- and middle-income countries. We create programmes that incorporate training, primary eye care, school eye health, and facility development into national and regional eye care strategies, always striving to be sensitive to local needs. In this approach, we help children learn and adults earn money so they can support their families. The charity currently operates initiatives in Ethiopia, Ghana, Zambia, and Sierra Leone, with a support office in the United Kingdom.
Job Description
- Reports to: the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
- Direct reports include the Director of Finance and Operations, the Fundraising Manager, and the Global Programmes Manager.
- Location: Ghana (with the ability to travel abroad to country programmes in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Zambia, and the United Kingdom).
Purpose
The CEO will oversee the organization and its international team; advise the Trustees on the organization’s strategic direction; implement Board decisions; and promote Vision Action and its vision, values, and objectives.
Overview of the role.
Vision Action is looking for a new CEO who will focus on ensuring that the organization continues to make a significant effect in addressing uncorrected refractive error and driving forward better, more equitable primary eye health internationally. The CEO will lead the organization’s management, playing an important role in the overall leadership and administration of Vision Action, as well as ensuring the organization’s long-term success. Vision Action is in an exciting era, with a new strategy for 2030 that the incoming CEO will play a key part in. The chosen candidate will be a dynamic leader who shares Vision Action’s ambition and is motivated by the potential to define the organization’s and its clients’ futures. The aim is to increase Charity awareness among key stakeholders, oversee all fundraising and external communications, and assure program excellence.
KEY AREAS: Principal duties.
- Lead and manage the organisation, collaborating with the Board to ensure that the organisation’s structure and accountability are in line with strategic and operational requirements, and implementing change as necessary.
- Create strategic and operational plans for Vision Action, which will be reviewed regularly by the Trustees.
- Actively seek varied sources of funding and income generation (including corporations and high-net-worth individuals), identifying and nurturing new prospects for Vision Action, and achieving 6-7 figure grants.
- Create a sustainability plan that includes contingency reserves.
- Establish and strengthen relationships and crucial networks.
- Provide vision and explain a compelling strategic direction.
- Motivate and link workers and their activities with Vision Action’s plan.
- Represent and grow Vision Action’s public visibility as a visible advocate.
- Maximize the influence of the vision sector as a whole by engaging and collaborating with other organisations, particularly those who advocate for primary eye care.
- Ensure that Vision Action is guided by values and principles and conducts all of its activities ethically.
Management of the organisation
- Working with the Board and SMT to meet Vision Action’s mission, statutory and regulatory duties, and strategic and operational goals.
- Supporting the Chair in creating the Board and its role, working with the Director of Finance and Operations to design the annual budget, provide financial management information, review performance versus budget, and take corrective action.
- Working with the Global Programmes Manager to update the Board about Vision Action’s humanitarian work and track Social Impact Return on Investment. Effectively supervise, grow, and evaluate personnel in your organization and direct reports.
- You will review and evaluate risk levels to ensure appropriate governance and mitigation, focusing on regulated activity, and maintain and develop appropriate targets, KPIs, and reporting systems to deliver high performance and meet relevant quality standards, as well as comply with employment and equality legislation and good practice. You will respect and adore Vision Action’s workers, volunteers, partners, and beneficiaries and uphold its equality, diversity, and inclusion mission.
Communications
- Promote Vision Action’s vision, mission, and goals as one of its primary ambassadors and spokesmen, interacting and collaborating with the broader industry.
- Work with the Fundraising Manager to market the organisation to institutional and individual funders, as well as the general public, to gain additional funds and form new partnerships.
- Communicate the organisation’s essential knowledge to relevant audiences.
- Attend networking events and meetings (both domestically and internationally).
- Optimise Vision Action’s engagement with the global vision sector.
General
- Promote and follow all Vision Action Policies.
- To perform any other duties as may be reasonably necessary in light of the nature and scope of this job description.

Knowledge and Experience
- Experience as a senior strategic leader in a comparable organisation. Already a trusted and respected leader, you will offer a proven track record of success as CEO, Chief Officer, or Executive Director, as well as hands-on experience shaping and implementing strategy as part of a Board.
- With expertise in inspiring and motivating a modern workforce, you will bring a strong Africa capable of delivering great performance with personnel and volunteers both locally and globally. You will also have previous organizational leadership and delivery expertise, allowing you to set the agenda, monitor deliverables, and provide effective oversight.
- Experience leading and managing teams in various locations/countries/organisations in a way that promotes collaboration, unlocks potential, and has a transformative impact.
- A grasp of charitable governance and finance is required, and you will bring knowledge and a successful track record in income generation operations (particularly in Africa), such as commercial, fundraising, and partnerships.
- Should have a proven track record of convincing and influencing key stakeholders, such as policymakers, lawmakers, and partners.
- Ideally, you should have prior expertise in the vision industry and a strong desire to make a difference, particularly in primary eye care, as well as demonstrated sympathy for persons with disabilities.
Qualifications
- A master’s degree in international relations, business administration, public health, or a closely connected discipline.
- At least ten years of experience in civil society or the non-governmental sector.
- A minimum of five years of senior leadership experience is necessary.
- A thorough understanding of financial management, corporate ethics, and grant cycle management is necessary.
- Experience with foreign operations, public health, or eye health is strongly preferred.
- Capable of leading, managing, and motivating a professional team (including employees and volunteers).
- Fluent in English.
