POSITION: National Soil Laboratory Specialist
Food and Agriculture Organization is carrying out the project ‘Soil mapping for resilient agrifood systems in Central America and sub-Saharan Africa (SoilFER) in Ghana’ – GCP/GLO/1127/USA. The initiative corresponds with FAO’s Program Priority Areas BP1: innovation for sustainable agricultural production; BP5 ‘Digital agriculture and BE 1: Climate change mitigation and adjusted agrifood systems, and aids in achieving SDGs 2.1, 2.4, and 5B.
The role is within the FAO Country Office located in Ghana.
Lines of Reporting
The Specialist at the National Soil Laboratory will be accountable to the FAO Representative in Ghana and the project management team at HQ, which operates within the NSL.
Technical Emphasis
The National Soil Laboratory Specialist will assist with the SoilFER project by supporting the Country Office in analyzing soil samples to evaluate their chemical, physical, and biological characteristics, such as nutrient levels, pH, and organic matter, to guide agricultural practices, environmental evaluations, and ongoing and upcoming initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise the analysis of soil samples for wet and dry chemistry in Ghana.
- Work together with project partners and labs to guarantee precise and prompt soil analysis findings.
- Assist in implementing quality assurance and quality control protocols for soil analysis procedures, which involves creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Facilitate the organization of capacity-building initiatives, including workshops and training sessions, to strengthen national skills in soil analysis and data management.
- Assist in carrying out the procurement activities for laboratory equipment in the project.
- Monitor advancement and evaluate the effectiveness of soil analysis and harmonization efforts.
- Assist in creating a national network of soil laboratories in Ghana.
- Convey project results and insights regarding soil analysis and harmonization to appropriate stakeholders.
- Cultivate and sustain connections with project stakeholders, especially national soil laboratories.
- Carry out additional tasks as delegated by FAOR.
CANDIDATES WILL BE EVALUATED BASED ON THE FOLLOWING
- Higher University Qualification in Agricultural Science, Soil Science, Crop Science, Agricultural Economics, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in soil testing [i.e., wet and dry chemistry] in either public or private soil labs.
- Proficient understanding (Level C) of English.
- Citizens of the Republic of Ghana.

- Knowledge in developing capacities and providing training
- Sufficient proof of technical knowledge regarding soil sampling methods
- Proficiency in soil lab procedures and soil testing.
- Strong writing, presenting, and communication abilities
