Do not Be a Victim of Immigration Fraud in Canada: Tips for International Students
Nearly 700 Indian students who came to Canada between 2018 and 2019 on student visas could be sent back home because their entry letters were found to be fake. These students asked for help from an unlicensed immigration expert in Jalandhar, who has since shut down.
When the students tried to stay in Canada permanently, the Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) looked at the papers on which their visas were based and found that the admission letters were fake.
What is a Study Permit?
A Study Permit is a piece of paper that lets foreigners study in Canada at designated learning institutions (DLIs). Most foreign students who want to study in Canada need a Study Permit, and it’s best to get this document before going there.
Finding the Right Immigration Consultant
Most students use the services of immigration advisors to help them apply to schools in Canada. But to escape fraud, it is important to find the right consultant.
In the public interest, the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) licenses and oversees the work of Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs) and Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors (RISIAs).
Only licensed lawyers and experts who are registered with the CICC are allowed to charge for advice and services related to immigration. The CICC also issues licenses to people who work as education providers.
Without a license, it is illegal to give Canadian visa advice for money or other benefits.
Tips for Hiring an Immigration Consultant
Check the state of your immigration consultant on the Public Register of CICC to avoid immigration fraud. Check the CICC’s Complaints and Professional Conduct section for disciplinary notices, ask your immigration counselor for references, and read online reviews.
It is also suggested that you compare your immigration consultant’s fees with those of others, contact the immigration consultant who is handling your application directly using the information on CICC’s Public Register, and ask your employer or school questions directly if you are in a work or study program.
Services Provided by RCICs
Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs) are licensed immigration consultants who can help clients with all aspects of immigration. This includes explaining immigration and citizenship options, helping you choose the best program for you, filling out and submitting your immigration or citizenship application, communicating with the Canadian government on your behalf, and representing you in an immigration or citizenship application or hearing.
RISIAs Do Not Charge a “Fee”
Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors (RISIAs) don’t take money straight from students. They work for Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) and get paid for it.
Say No to Ghost Consultants
Ghost consultants are unlicensed immigration agents who, among other things, offer services to foreign students for a fee and then stop talking to the victim once the money has changed hands.
To avoid these scams, watch out for phishing scams, hang up if an automated call fears legal action because of your immigration status, don’t accept job offers that you didn’t apply for, and don’t look for immigration consultants on social media.
Avoid Rushing Into Signing a Housing Lease Agreement
Scammers offer fake places to stay in exchange for cash up front, and then they disappear. Students should not rush into getting a lease for a place to live before they get to Canada.
Conclusion
700 Indian students were expelled for bogus admission letters. An immigration professional may have prevented this catastrophic issue. Students must examine their consultants’ CICC Public Register status to avoid immigration fraud.
