Denmark Expands Opportunities: 162 Jobs Added to Positive Lists for Foreign Workers

Denmark Expands Opportunities: 162 Jobs Added to Positive Lists for Foreign Workers

Denmark is enhancing opportunities for skilled professionals with its updated Positive Lists for Skilled Work and Higher Education jobs, effective January 1, 2025. These lists provide a clear pathway for foreign workers seeking residence and work permits in Denmark.

The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) maintains these lists. They outline professions facing labor shortages, offering foreign workers a chance to secure work and residence permits.

What Is the Positive List?

The Positive List is a dynamic scheme updated biannually, on January 1 and July 1. It consists of two categories:

  • Positive List for Skilled Work: Targets skilled professions experiencing labor shortages.
  • Positive List for Higher Education: Focuses on roles requiring university-level qualifications in shortage occupations.

Foreign workers with job offers listed in either category can apply for Danish residence and work permits, provided they meet educational and professional requirements.

Key Changes in the January 2025 Update

Fewer Positions for Skilled Work

The updated Positive List for Skilled Work now features only 48 job titles. This reduction reflects fewer registered labor shortages in skilled professions.

Expanded Opportunities for Higher Education

In contrast, the Positive List for Higher Education has expanded to 162 job titles. This growth stems from a heightened need for highly educated professionals and a policy ensuring job titles remain listed for at least two years.

Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Workers

To qualify for a work and residence permit under the Positive List, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Relevant Education: Your qualifications must match the job title requirements. For higher education roles, a relevant university degree is essential.
  • Employment Duration: Permits are valid for the employment period, lasting up to four years.

Salary Standards and Employment Conditions

Starting January 1, 2025, SIRI will enforce updated income requirements. Jobs without collective agreements or employer organization coverage must meet Danish salary standards, set at approximately DKK 71,000 monthly. This ensures foreign workers receive competitive wages aligned with local norms.

Benefits of the Positive List

The Positive List simplifies the process for foreign workers in eligible professions to relocate to Denmark. Addressing labor shortages supports Denmark’s economic growth and fosters the integration of international talent.

How to Apply

If you have a job offer in a profession listed on the Positive List, follow these steps to apply for a residence and work permit:

  1. Secure a Job Offer: Ensure your job is listed on the Positive List and verify that your qualifications meet the requirements.
  2. Prepare Your Documentation: Gather essential documents, including:
      • A valid passport.
      • Proof of educational qualifications.
      • An employment contract or job offer letter.
      • Proof of relevant work experience (if required).
      • Confirmation that your salary meets Danish standards.
  3. Complete the Application Form: Visit SIRI’s official website and select the appropriate form for the Positive List category.
  4. Submit Your Application: Apply online via SIRI’s portal or submit your application at a Danish embassy. Pay the application fee.
  5. Attend Biometrics Appointment: Schedule a biometrics appointment for fingerprints and a photo at a designated center or embassy.
  6. Wait for Processing: Processing times may vary. Check SIRI’s website for updates.
  7. Receive Your Permit: Once approved, collect your residence and work permit, allowing you to live and work in Denmark under the Positive List scheme.

Final Thoughts

Denmark’s updated Positive Lists for 2025 demonstrate its commitment to addressing labor shortages while welcoming foreign professionals. With expanded opportunities and competitive salary requirements, Denmark remains an attractive destination for international talent.
