About the Role

The Data Modernization Director will provide strategic oversight and direction for multiple modernization initiatives under Strategy A3: Data Modernization. The role focuses on guiding planning, coordination, and alignment across projects rather than hands-on execution once implementation begins. Key initiatives include modernising the agency website, implementing new licensing and certification databases, improving interoperability for immunization information systems, and enhancing electronic test orders and results for the state public health laboratory.

The position requires consistent collaboration with agency staff, strong project governance, and the ability to maintain momentum toward defined goals and deadlines. This is a full-time, onsite role based in Jackson, Mississippi, with a planned duration of 24 months starting in early 2026.

Employment Details

This role is offered on a full-time contract basis at 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM CST. Compensation structures may include W-2, 1099, or C2C arrangements. Immigration eligibility includes U.S. Citizens and H-1B holders. The position requires completion of criminal background checks, drug screening, and fingerprint screening. No travel is required for this role.

Job Duties

The Data Modernization Director will be responsible for the following key functions:

Providing oversight and strategic direction for CDC PHIG-funded data modernization projects.
Assisting in the development and implementation of project timelines and milestones.
Supporting project leaders during implementation phases as needed.
Maintaining consistent and effective communication with agency staff and stakeholders.
Ensuring sustained focus on project objectives, deliverables, and deadlines.
Developing and managing a support team for data modernization initiatives when required.

Job Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate the following qualifications and expertise:

Proven experience overseeing planning, organisation, and budgeting of complex data management or modernization projects.
Strong communication skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams involved in data collection, management, and system development.
Experience operating under national data and IT security standards related to protected health information.
Working knowledge of data management, visualisation, and analytics tools used to integrate and share diverse datasets.
Experience engaging with multiple vendors providing modern data platforms, systems, and analytical tools.
