Comparing Canada’s International Student Work Policies with Top Global Competitors

In a news conference on April 29, IRCC announced that policies for overseas students will change soon. This change will allow them to work off-campus for a total of 24 hours per week throughout the academic semester. Students were permitted to work as long as they desired during scheduled breaks and while courses were in session under a temporary law enacted in 2022. The old rule, which limited abroad students’ labor to 20 hours per week, is superseded by the new rule, which takes effect in the fall of 2024. Explore the best countries where overseas students can work widely.

Under the amended regulation, international students can work full-time during academic breaks such as the summer and winter holidays, with a maximum of 24 hours per week.

Canada’s International Student Work Policies Vs Top Global Competitors.

In terms of work-hour rules, Canada remains consistent with other top foreign student locations. According to ApplyBoard’s January 2024 study, the top five nations for international students in 2023 were recognized. This section of the article aims to provide a brief overview of the work hour laws for international students in each of these countries.

The United States (17)

People in the United States with a valid F-1 student visa can work up to 20 hours per week on campus. Off-campus students who meet the qualifications can work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions. Students are permitted to work full-time over the summer and during annual breaks from school, subject to certain conditions.

Work Hour Limits for International Students in the UK (10%)

The Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) of the United Kingdom requires that international students who are authorized to work work no more than ten or twenty hours per week. The UKCISA advises students to confirm any job limitations proposed or implemented by their institution. It also confirms that foreign students are allowed to work full-time employment outside of class.

Canada’s work hours policy (10%)

For your knowledge, starting in the fall of 2024, the following will be included in Canada’s work hour policy for international students:

During the academic period, you can work off-campus for 24 hours each week.
Full-time job throughout scheduled academic breaks.

France (6%)

According to Campus France, the French government permits international students to work up to 964 hours per year. This limit, or approximately 21 hours per week on average, represents 60% of the French legal work year. Furthermore, France takes a different approach to foreign students who want to work at their universities. This law allows these students to work a maximum of 300 hours from July 1 to August 31. They can also work up to 670 hours between September 1 and June 30.

International Student Work Policies in Australia and Germany.

ApplyBoard ranked France alongside two other countries.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, Australian students can work up to 48 hours per week while studying. Furthermore, the Australian government requires that holders of student visas have the freedom to seek employment during interruptions in their training or academic program.

International students in Germany can work up to 20 hours per week. According to the ICEF Monitor, this is permissible while they are in classes.

The importance of work hours for global students

Working while studying is an excellent opportunity for international students. They are able to support their family and themselves by making an income from it.

To be eligible for off-campus employment during the academic term in Canada, international students must meet specific conditions.

  • In possession of a valid study permission.
  • Enrolling in full-time studies at an approved learning institution.
  • Pursue an academic, vocational, or professional training program for at least six months.
  • Possession of a valid Social Insurance Number.

International students must have work authorization indicated on their study permit in order to work while attending classes in Canada. This authorization defines whether they are permitted to work on and off-campus. Once their studies at their DLI begin, overseas students are eligible to work in Canada. Furthermore, international students must complete their studies with a degree, diploma, or certificate.

On-campus vs. Off-campus Work for International Students in Canada

Working off campus is working for any employer other than the university or institution.

Having a job on campus means working for any employer that is on the campus of the university or college. This includes working for the university or college itself, for a faculty member (for example, as a research assistant), for yourself (if you are self-employed and working on campus), for a student organization, or for a private contractor that provides services on campus, such as a gym or restaurant.

In the event that a student is still qualified to work on campus, there is no restriction placed on the number of hours that they can put in there.

Sufficient Financial Resources Requirement

When applying for a study permit in Canada, it is essential to keep in mind that even if you want to work while you are there doing your education, you still need to demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources. This indicates that you are required to provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself while you are pursuing your education without having to work.

In order to establish that you have sufficient financial resources, it is not sufficient to demonstrate that you intend to work while you are studying in Canada. Therefore, the fact that you intend to work while you are studying in Canada will not satisfy the requirement to demonstrate financial capabilities prior to arrival.
