Job Description

Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE), Inc. doing business as CARE International in Ghana is seeking a Finance Director who reports to the Country Director (CD) and is a member of the Country Office (CO) Senior Management Team.

The Finance Director provides strategic leadership and direction in all matters related to CO financial and grants/contracts management in contribution to the attainment of CARE’s Vision 2030 in Ghana.

S/he is primarily responsible for the planning, recording, monitoring, and reporting of CO financial operations in compliance with CARE, the Government of Ghana, and donors’ rules and regulations.

To fulfill this mandate, the Finance Director provides robust financial analyses with actionable recommendations to guide strategic planning and decision-making by the CD/SMT and enable the CO to effectively navigate through changes in the local and organizational regulatory context, as well as the evolving funding landscape.

JOB PROFILE

  • The Finance Director has oversight of the day-to-day financial operations in the CO and is accountable for organizing and providing high-quality financial services to CO programs, projects, and other units in an efficient and timely manner.
  • S/he works closely with the Shared Services Center (SSC) and Regional Management Unit (RMU) and CO senior management to ensure appropriate financial support and resources are available.
  • S/he ensures that strong partnerships and mutually accountable collaboration for planning, delivery, and results, are developed and nurtured between Finance and all other units in the CO.
  • The Finance Director is a seasoned professional with excellent knowledge of accounting and financial management, and proven analytic and critical thinking skills.
  • S/he is able to plan, prioritize and work effectively under time pressure; and to lead her/his teams to do the same.
  • S/he is proactive and able to offer structured guidance to colleagues and partners and is adept at using financial data and analytics to influence operational and strategic decisions.
  • S/he is also an experienced facilitator with strong written and verbal communication skills in English, capable of training and strengthening the capacities of finance and non-finance staff.

This requires strong leadership and interpersonal skills founded on a proven commitment to integrity, excellence, and the conscientious stewardship of all entrusted resources.

S/he participates in and contributes to the strategic leadership and direction of the CO; and provides insights and business acumen to improve the agility and efficacy of our financial systems and processes for a successful achievement of the CARE 2030 Vision and strategic framework.

S/he contributes to the positioning of CARE Ghana as a partner of choice both internally (with other COs, SSC, RMU, Head Quarters (HQ) and CARE Member Partners (CMPs)) and externally (with donors, partners, Government, etc.); and as is required of all SMT members, s/he is a trusted ambassador and champion of CARE’s brand and program in Ghana.

Key Roles and Responsibilities are:

  • Financial System Operations Management and CO Data Processing
  • Treasury and Cash functions
  • Budgeting and Forecasting functions
  • Quality review and analysis of financial reports to support decision making
  • Compliance and Control functions
  • Staff Management and Development, Talent Management and Capacity Building

Required Skills or Experience

Experience

  • Minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years as Finance Controller, Finance Manager, Finance Director in CO environment is desired.
  • Ten (10) years’ experiences in not-for-profit financial, budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, grants/contract management, and business management in developing countries;

Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of financial accounting, reporting and grants and contracts management practices and procedures
  • Facilitation skills to conduct training sessions for small, medium and large sized groups
  • Solid analytical skills, problem-solving, and experience with major donor audits (e.g USAID, EU, etc.)
  • Customer-focused while handling multiple priorities effectively under time pressure
  • Quickly learn new systems, processes, and procedures and adapt local practices to global standards
  • Good leadership, coaching, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work on teams, work at a detailed level and understand the larger picture
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel and Word and in using financial software applications
  • Resourcefulness and action-orientated

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject Accounting, Finance or Business Management or its equivalent.
  • A Master’s degree in Business Administration and NGO Management or its equivalent will be an added advantage.
  • A member in good standing from any recognized professional bodies such as ACCA, CPA, CA.
