VISITORS CAN STILL APPLY FOR WORK PERMITS IN CANADA UNDER A TEMPORARY POLICY EXTENDED BY 2 YEARS.

Canadian visitors with a job offer can apply for and receive a work permit without leaving the country. This policy allows visitors with a work permit in the last year to apply for interim work authorization to start working for their new employer faster.

COVID policy, which expired on February 28, 2023, has been extended until February 28, 2025. Keep this temporary policy in place to hire foreign workers since many Canadian employers are having trouble finding enough workers during economic growth.

Most Canadian workers needed their first work permit before arriving before COVID-19. If approved, they would have to leave Canada as a visitor before getting their work permit. This new policy eliminates leaving Canada.

Those who want to take advantage of this temporary public policy must be able to:

  • have a valid visitor visa that lets them stay in Canada on the day they apply.
  • have a job offer backed by a labor market impact assessment (LMIA) or an offer of work that doesn’t need an LMIA.
  • Employer-specific work permits must be applied for by February 28, 2025.
  • meet every other standard rule for admittance

Visitors who have had a valid permit in the past year can follow special instructions to get temporary work permission to start working for their new employer before their work permit application is approved.
