Canada PR: Why International Students Are Seeking Asylum in Canada

One of the main causes of the increasing number of asylum seekers in Canada is foreign students. As of 2023, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada reports that the number of international students seeking refuge has increased by fifteen thousand percent over the previous year.

More immigrants do not apply for asylum and instead depend on public services to support their university education since they do not want to return to their home countries and do not have any other justification for staying in Canada. • Residency: For some students without sponsorship, the move from Temporary Resident (TR) to Permanent Resident (PR) status in Canada can be somewhat challenging.
• Work permit: To work in Canada, you must have work experience in the field you want to work in. This is one requirement that some international students do not meet, and therefore are still unable to obtain funding to return to their home country.
• Growing housing and living expenses: Asylum applicants are becoming more numerous due to rising living expenses. Some international students are unable to afford the high cost of living and tuition, which forces them to leave school without a visa. Furthermore, because housing costs are so expensive, newly arrived immigrants are being forced to look for work after paying for necessities such as clothing, food, transportation, and communication.

How the Canadian government plans to prevent students from misusing the Asylum system

It is imperative that the Canadian government clarify to international students the differences between a work permit and a study permit, and promote systemic transparency.
