Canada PR: Why International Students Are Seeking Asylum in Canada

One of the main causes of the increasing number of asylum seekers in Canada is foreign students. As of 2023, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada reports that the number of international students seeking refuge has increased by fifteen thousand percent over the previous year.

More immigrants do not apply for asylum and instead depend on public services to support their university education since they do not want to return to their home countries and do not have any other justification for staying in Canada. To restrict the high rate of immigration for diakontri, the Canadian government is attempting to develop laws for study and work permits for the years 2024–2027.

Marc Miller, Canada’s minister of immigration, refugees, and citizenship, announced new requirements last Monday for foreign workers, international students, and dia spouses. These requirements include a 35% reduction in the work permit rate in 2024 and a 10% reduction in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

Common Reasons for International Students Seeking Asylum

Even while it may seem like a misuse of the system that the Canadian government set up to assist those in extreme need of aid, some international students find themselves stuck in Canada for various reasons.

  • Escalation of international conflict: Conflicts and hostilities in certain countries, such as the Congo, Haiti, Syria, and Ukraine, do not prevent people from traveling abroad in search of safety.
  • Residency: For some students without sponsorship, the move from Temporary Resident (TR) to Permanent Resident (PR) status in Canada can be somewhat challenging.
  • Work permit: To work in Canada, you must have work experience in the field you want to work in. This is one requirement that some international students do not meet, and therefore are still unable to obtain funding to return to their home country.
  • Growing housing and living expenses: Asylum applicants are becoming more numerous due to rising living expenses. Some international students are unable to afford the high cost of living and tuition, which forces them to leave school without a visa. Furthermore, because housing costs are so expensive, newly arrived immigrants are being forced to look for work after paying for necessities such as clothing, food, transportation, and communication.
