Canada Immigration Latest Update: Express Entry, Work Permit, PNP Draws, New Immigration Pathway

We’ll discuss the most recent changes to Canadian immigration in this article, as well as Express entry, work permits, PNP drawings, and new immigration routes.

Canada Express Entry

To solve the dilemma of a labor shortage, Canada has dramatically expanded its immigration goals. Through Express entrance lotteries, nearly 60,000 applicants were invited to apply for permanent residency in the first half of 2022. In 2023, Canada plans to accept 465,000 immigrants, with even more anticipated in the second half of the year.

To attract the best talent, the nation has also implemented category-based draws and a Tech Talent plan. A million immigrants will also be invited to Canada this year via the provincial nominee program (PNP route). The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System CRS scores have ranged from 439 to 507, and draws have been held on a regular basis.

These programs seek to address the labor shortage and ease the entry of qualified immigrants into Canada.

Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP)

On July 13, 2023, Manitoba held a fresh invitation round under its expression of interest (EOI) procedure. The most recent Manitoba PNP draw took place in July 2023, and 540 candidates received laws. Invited candidates also needed minimum CRS scores ranging from 604 to 774 under all three MPNP streams, including skilled employees in Manitoba, the international education stream, and skilled workers overseas.

Manitoba Expression of Interest Draw (185 skilled worker)

In Manitoba, occupation-specific selection profiles indicating existing employment in occupations with high labor demands were taken into account;

1. Number of laws issued 205

  • The lowest-ranked candidate invited was ranked 604 on the list. The following National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2021 occupations were taken into consideration for this draw.
  • Ken is a middle management specialist in the health sector. Careers in the administrative services sector, banking, commercial, and communication services except for broadcasting
  • Supply chain, financial, and administrative assistance jobs in logistics
  • Helpers and laborers
  • Transport drivers
  • Operators and laborers

2. Number of laws issued 237

  • Invitations were sent to the 661 lowest-ranked candidates.
  • Several pieces of legislation produced 57 skilled worker overseas profiles that declared being personally invited by the MPNP under a targeted recruitment strategy in the International Education stream profiles that declared satisfying International Education stream eligibility standards.

3. Number of laws issued 41

  • Invitations were sent to the 774 lowest-ranked candidates.
  • The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) held its first AOA draw in July. One hundred and seventy-seven of the 540 laws awarded in this draw went to applicants who claimed a valid Express Entry profile number and job seeker validation code.

Agriculture and Agri-food Occupations for Category-Based Express Entry Draws

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will begin holding category-based selection lotteries for applicants to the Express Entry program, according to an announcement made by immigration minister Sean Fraser on May 31. Candidates for express admission with high French language skills or job experience in the following fields will receive preference from IRCC.

  • Healthcare
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions
  • Trades such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
  • Transport

Following information concerning shortages in the Canadian labor market, IRCC decided on the professions. The provinces and territories, as well as stakeholders across the nation, were also consulted by IRCC. 500 healthcare professionals were invited to apply for permanent residency in the first-ever category-based express entry lottery, which was held on June 28 by the IRCC.

A category-based draw for 500 candidates in STEM fields was held on July 5 by the IRCC. Another 1,500 healthcare professionals were allowed to apply for permanent residency on July 6.

Why Agriculture and Agri-food Occupations

To inform immigration selection priorities and categories, IRCC held discussions that involved soliciting opinions and proposals from a wide variety of public stakeholders. To understand their possible objectives and requirements, IRCC also interacted with provincial and territorial representatives.

According to the respondents, one of the four sectors with the highest demand by the end of 2022 was agricultural jobs. The category of agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting had a 10,535 or 3.9% job vacancy rate. The number of openings by province was;

  • Ontario – 3,070
  • Quebec – 1,950
  • British Columbia – 2,475
  • Alberta – 940
  • Saskatchewan – 540
  • Manitoba – 550
  • New Brunswick – 720
  • Nova Scotia – 425
  • Pay – 130

What are the Agriculture Occupations?

The category of jobs under “agriculture and agri-food” includes three jobs. These consist of

  • Landscaping, groundskeeping, and horticultural services, as well as contractors and supervisors
  • Contractors for agricultural services and farm managers
  • Retail and wholesale butchers

Eligibility Requirements for the Agriculture Occupations Category

To be eligible, you must

  • To begin with, fulfill the requirements of one of the express entry programs, specifically the federal skilled worker program, the Canadian experience class, or the federal skilled trades program.
  • Next, have at least six months of continuous job experience in one of the mentioned occupations over the course of the last three years.
  • Additionally, adhere to every other criterion listed in the round’s rules.

Express Entry Category-Based Rounds of Invitation Selection

Candidates who are qualified in a particular category in category-based drawings will receive invitations from IRCC to submit applications for permanent residence. This standard contains;

  • First, employment experience in a certain National Occupational Classification (NOC) tier category
  • Also, language ability in either English or French
  • Next, education

Comprehensive Ranking System Scores

There will also be draws based on categories in addition to general and program-specific lotteries. Top applicants who can fill employment and labor market vacancies in Canada and advance economic objectives are invited to express admission draws. The comprehensive ranking system (CRS), a points-based system, is used to rank applicants in the express entry pool.

Candidates are ranked using a variety of criteria, including age, education, language proficiency, and work history. For category-based draws, a candidate’s CRS score will still play an important role. Candidates with the highest ranking scores who are also qualified for the category-based selection process will get invitations to apply (ITA) from IRCC.

Immigration & Work Permit Pathways

For STEM professionals, Canada offers a variety of visa and work permit options. To boost its economic development and increase its competitiveness internationally, Canada has been actively opening its doors to STEM experts from all over the world. Investigate some of the well-known permanent and temporary residence options for STEM workers in Canada.

Express Entry

In Canada, Express Entry is the main Federal immigration route. It enables the government to accept talented immigrants who can meet the demands of the nation’s labor market. Sean Fraser, the minister in charge of immigration, recently announced the introduction of category-based selection draws for Express entry applicants, giving preference to those with strong French language skills or work experience in industries like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), healthcare, trades, transportation, agriculture, and agri-food.

Global Talent StreamWork Permits

A simplified work permit alternative aimed at foreign nationals working in the IT industry is called the Global Talent Stream (GTS). For highly qualified Tech Talent, it offers accelerated processing of work visa applications with a typical turnaround time of two weeks. Two categories make up the GTS.

Employers wishing to hire highly qualified people for positions on the Global Talent professions list fall under Category B, whereas high-growth enterprises that need to hire distinctive, specialized talent from overseas go under Category A. This list includes a lot of jobs that are in the stem field.

Quebec’s Facilitated Processing StreamWork Permits

Employers in Quebec can hire temporary foreign workers in specific occupations because of Quebec’s streamlined processing stream, which waives some procedures including posting the job. Employers must show that the foreign employee satisfies the educational and experience criteria, that the wage given is consistent with local norms, and that, if necessary, a transition plan is provided, even though advertising is not required.

The list of assisted careers in Quebec includes a lot of STEM-related vocations.

New H-1B Open Work Permit Program

Canada will introduce the new H-1B open work permit program on July 16, 2023. Certain American H-1B specialty occupation visa holders will receive expedited work permits under this program. Those accepted receive an open work permit good for three years that allows them to work for any employer in Canada.

This program intends to increase employment possibilities for highly trained employees in the high-tech industry and support economic expansion in North America. The applicants’ spouses and dependents will also be qualified for temporary residence visas with any necessary employment or study permits.

These routes show Canada’s dedication to drawing in and keeping STEM specialists. By offering a variety of immigration alternatives, the nation hopes to expand its talent pool and spur innovation in important industries. Investigating these routes may open the door to a fruitful career and a happy life in Canada for stem professionals seeking possibilities there.

Canada Expands Work Permit Agreement with the United Kingdom

A new Canada-UK Youth Mobility agreement announced and scheduled to go into effect in 2024. Several enhancements to the two nations’ current Youth Mobility agreement are included in the new Arrangement;

  • First, an expansion of the eligibility age to 18 to 35
  • Next, the addition of two new streams for UK nationals moving to Canada
  • Also, an increase in the visa period to three years
  • Additionally, get a free legal consultation

Ages 18 to 30 can participate in the existing agreement with an issued two-year visa. The Youth Mobility Agreement, which was initially introduced in 2008, intends to boost cross-border employment prospects. The International Experience Canada (IEC) program of the Canadian government oversees Youth Mobility Agreements.

IEC offers three categories.

  • Foremost, participants in international Co-op internships can acquire employer-specific work permits that let students gain experience related to their studies.
  • Also, Working holiday participants can receive open work permits that let them work for any employer in Canada.
  • Lastly, participants who are young professionals have the option of receiving an employer-specific work permit to get specific work experience related to their course of study or intended vocation.

Currently, in 2023, Canada has youth mobility agreements with 37 nations. IEC is a program that Canada offers to about 90,000 young people worldwide. IEC is one strategy the Canadian government is using to address the labor shortages in the nation. Additionally, young people from the UK are in a good position to become Canadian permanent residents after relocating there.
