Canada Express Entry New Rules: Canada Revises Immigration Rules

Canada has unveiled significant changes to its Express Entry immigration system. These updates will impact workers seeking permanent residency, especially Indian engineers, technicians, and IT professionals. The revisions to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) will change how candidates are evaluated.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced these changes to enhance border management and prevent fraud. They particularly affect individuals from India trying to enter Canada or the U.S. illegally. Temporary residents who leave Canada and return immediately to extend their stay will also feel the impact of these new rules.

Key Changes to Express Entry

One major change affects IT workers applying for Canadian permanent residency. They will no longer receive additional CRS points for job offers backed by a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). An LMIA allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers when they cannot find suitable Canadian candidates.

What’s Changing?

Previously, candidates with LMIA-backed job offers received a significant boost to their CRS score—an extra 50 or 200 points, depending on the job. These bonus points often made a crucial difference, in determining who received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.

Now, without those extra points, some candidates may find it harder to secure an ITA. This change will increase competition among candidates whose profiles are assessed on age, education, and language skills. It remains unclear when these changes will take effect.

Broader Immigration Revisions

These changes follow a recent announcement from the Trudeau government regarding immigration policy adjustments. The government plans to reduce the number of both permanent and temporary residents allowed into Canada over the next three years. This strategy aims to address ongoing challenges in housing, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Additional Changes

The new rules also include a ban on “flagpoles.” Temporary residents can no longer leave Canada briefly and then re-enter at a border crossing to update or change their immigration status. This practice is now prohibited.

Furthermore, immigration authorities have gained the power to cancel or amend immigration documents if they serve the public interest, especially in cases involving fraud.

Minister Miller emphasized the dangers of illegal crossings, especially during winter months. “To anyone considering entering Canada illegally, we want to make it clear that trying to cross into Canada between our official ports of entry is dangerous,” he stated.

Conclusion

The timing for the implementation of these changes remains uncertain. However, they mark a significant shift in Canada’s approach to immigration. As the government works to address pressing issues, prospective immigrants must stay informed about these developments. Adapting to the new rules will be crucial for those seeking a future in Canada.
