New Category-Based Selection

The revised category-based selection criteria for Express entry draws were finalized by the IRCC, according to an announcement made on May 31 by Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Sean Fraser. Based on labor market predictions, conversations with IRCC partners and stakeholders, as well as with provincial and territorial governments, the categories were determined. The list is as follows:

  • Healthcare
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions
  • Trades such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
  • Transport
  • Agriculture and Agri-food
  • Strong French language proficiency

Since June 2022, category-based selection drawings have been anticipated. Consequently, when the Canadian government amended the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to permit the selection of immigrants based on crucial characteristics that support Canada’s economic priorities, such as specialized work experience to cover labor market gaps or proficiency in French, it was doing so to promote Canada’s economic priorities.

FAQ About the New Category-Based Draws

  1. If I don’t qualify for Express Entry but I have stem job experience, I’m I still eligible?

No, candidates must participate in the Express Entry application pool through an Express Entry controlled program, such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, or the Canadian Experience Class, to be eligible for invites in a category-based selection draw.

2. Does my CRS score still matter?

The express entry pool of candidates who satisfy the category requirements ranks according to the IRCC, and the top candidates will be invited to submit applications for permanent residence. The CRS score required to rank eligible candidates, just like in a standard draw. The likelihood of receiving an ITA is still highest for those with better scores.

A high CRS score is still required to be taken into consideration for the normal all-program or program-specific draws that IRCC will still hold.

3. How often will category-based selection draw hold?

There is no requirement for the IRCC to conduct Express entry draws on a specified timetable or to extend invitations to a specific number of applicants via any program or category. Draws take place at the Minister of Immigration’s discretion and following his responsibility to assist both the French language and Canada’s economic interests. For any category, draws can happen at any time.

4. Are the criteria different in each new category?

All candidates must meet the following requirements to be eligible for one of the five occupation-specific categories:

  • Foremost are qualified if they have collected at least six months of continuous work experience in one of the specified occupations over the last three years, either in Canada or overseas.
  • Meet all conditions listed in the round’s instructions as well.
  • Candidates invited based on their strong French language proficiency must have results from a French language test that show a minimum score of 7 in each of the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on the Niveaux de Competence Linguistique Canadiens, as well as satisfy all the requirements and guidelines for that round.
