Who Should Apply?

The selection committee welcomes applicants from all countries without geographic restrictions. Max Planck Institutes seek individuals who demonstrate genuine research potential.

Essential eligibility requirements include:

Background relevant to the selected research project
Bachelor’s students must complete at least four semesters or two years of study before the internship begins
Graduates with bachelor’s or master’s degrees eligible provided they have not started PhD studies
Strong academic record demonstrating capability
Good English command for communicating with supervisors and understanding scientific literature
Full availability for the entire 90 day period from July 1 through September 30, 2027

Required Documents

Candidates must prepare a complete application package before submission.

Curriculum vitae not exceeding two pages
Motivational statement explaining research interest, relevant experience, selected projects, and circumstances limiting access to advanced research opportunities
Academic transcripts from all university studies completed
Available degree certificates
Optional reference letter that may receive consideration during selection

The motivational statement carries particular weight. Therefore, applicants should address the access limitation component thoughtfully rather than treating it as a formality. This programme specifically seeks talented students who face barriers to research opportunities.

What Will You Gain?

Interns at Max Planck Institutes engage in research that advances scientific understanding. Participants contribute to projects examining how brains process information, how machines learn, and how computational methods solve complex problems. Moreover, they work alongside scientists who lead their respective fields.

The experience builds capabilities essential for research careers. Interns develop technical skills, research methodologies, and scientific communication abilities. Furthermore, they gain exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration that defines modern cognitive science.

Tübingen itself offers an inspiring setting for this work. The city hosts one of Europe’s leading AI research clusters alongside a historic university. Additionally, its location in southwestern Germany provides access to cultural and professional opportunities across the region.

Why This Internship Matters

The Max Planck Society ranks among the world’s foremost research organisations. Its institutes consistently produce groundbreaking discoveries across scientific disciplines. Consequently, interning here connects participants with work at the absolute frontier of knowledge.

The programme specifically targets students who face limited access to advanced research opportunities. Therefore, it serves as a genuine pathway for talented individuals who might otherwise lack exposure to world class facilities and mentorship.
