The Bank of Ghana has commenced the piloting of the e-cedi in Sefwi Asafo in the Western Region of Ghana. Dr. Addison, the Governor of the Central Bank of Ghana made this known during Ghana CEO Summit last Monday.
The e-cedi is an exact copy of the Ghanaian currency. It is designed for retail purposes. Stored in a digital wallet, the e-cedi is convertible to Ghana cedis in the form of cash or deposit money. It can be redeemed for physical cash and used for transaction purposes.
According to Dr. Ernest Addison, the usage and uptake of the offline version of the e-cedi are being piloted in a small town in the Western North Region.
Additionally, he stated that people in the said community have begun using the e-cedi for transactional purposes. That is, people in the community have started using the e-cedi to buy basic commodities.
He continued by saying, his outfit will collaborate hand-in-hand with the indigenous to obtain the necessary information in order to forecast the e–cedi future.
Dr, Addison went on to say that “These are clearly landmark events in providing digital leadership with the payment systems to lead to a digitalized economy in the near future.”
