Bioinformatics Engineer Jobs in UK 2026 (up to £60,000 Annually)

Want your code to help feed the world sustainably? An Oxford crop science startup seeks a Bioinformatics Engineer. Visa sponsorship is available for the right candidate immediately. If genomics and AI excite you, this role offers genuine mission-driven impact.

About the Role

You will own next-generation sequencing pipelines within the Trait Design team. This is firmly an engineering role, not pure data analysis. Additionally, you will optimise pipelines for large, complex genomic datasets. You will also work closely with wet-lab scientists on workflow design.

About the Hiring Firm

The company is a well-funded Oxford University spin-out in crop science. It combines genomics, AI, and gene editing to enhance global crops. The mission targets improved farm yields and gigaton-scale carbon mitigation. The team includes two experienced bioinformaticians and a recognised CSO.

Job Duties

  • Build, maintain, and improve next-generation sequencing pipelines continuously
  • Optimise pipelines for large-scale genomic datasets on cloud infrastructure
  • Drive automation so scientists can run pipelines without coding
  • Collaborate with wet-lab scientists to co-design practical analyses
  • Champion strong software engineering practices, testing, and documentation
  • Develop new pipelines as evolving research needs require

Job Requirements

  • Proven experience building bioinformatics pipelines using Nextflow or Snakemake
  • Strong fluency in Python and comfort within Linux environments
  • Hands-on experience with NGS data formats, including FASTQ and VCF
  • Proficiency with Git, GitHub, and common bioinformatics tools
  • BSc or MSc in bioinformatics, genomics, or a related field
