Baggage Loss And Delay Coverage as Type of Insurance

If an airline loses or delays your luggage, baggage loss and delay coverage will pay up to a certain amount. The amounts vary from insurer to insurer and are usually based on a pre-selected value for lost luggage and a certain threshold for delayed luggage. Since delays in luggage usually last a few days, compensation gives a traveler money to buy clothes and other necessities until their luggage arrives.

What the airline takes care of

Most people who lose their luggage are angry when they find out that most airlines only give a small amount of money as compensation, if they give any at all. Some airlines may not pay passengers if their bags get lost or are delayed. When compensation is given, it is based on each individual case, but you should never count on it in an emergency.

What Credit Card Benefits And Primary Insurance Cover

Some credit cards provide this benefit prior to departure. Some offer limited or exclusive lost or delayed luggage insurance. Many credit cards only cover what primary insurance does not. Credit card companies often struggle to compensate customers without house or renter’s insurance with lost baggage provisions. Be aware that some credit cards offer much better coverage than others.

Why getting travel insurance is a good idea

Trip insurance for misplaced or delayed baggage has limitations. It usually covers airline-excluded costs. Travel insurance covers most luggage losses as airlines rarely do. If there is a delay, the airline normally won’t pay any permitted monetary compensation for at least 24 hours, and the policy may provide further compensation if the airline’s provision is inadequate based on how long delayed luggage will take to arrive. Before buying vacation insurance, check if it’s secondary to house or renter’s insurance.

Even if you can’t predict or stop your luggage from getting lost or being late, it’s smart to keep important items in your carry-on bag whenever possible. Before buying a trip insurance policy, you should always compare its terms and the amount of money it pays out for lost or delayed luggage.
