Australia Revises English Language Test Requirements for Visas Starting August 7

Australia is making significant changes to its English language test requirements for visa applications. Beginning on August 7, 2025, the country will accept additional tests, including CELPIP, LanguageCert Academic, and the Michigan English Test (MET). Alongside this expansion, the government is updating score requirements for several existing tests, ensuring they accurately reflect language proficiency levels.

If you’re considering a move to Australia or planning a long stay, be aware of these important updates. The Australian Department of Home Affairs is broadening the list of accepted English tests, aiming to standardize requirements and improve the overall assessment process.

New English Tests Accepted for Australia Visa

From August 7, 2025, applicants can submit results from the following newly accepted English language tests. All scores will remain valid for three years from the test date.

1. CELPIP General

CELPIP General is a computer-based test popular in Canada for immigration purposes. It assesses everyday English used in work and social situations. The test includes Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking components, all completed in one sitting. Typically, results are available within 4 to 5 business days.

2. LanguageCert Academic

The LanguageCert Academic test evaluates English skills essential for academic and professional environments. It measures real-life language use and is available in both paper and computer formats. Scores are usually released within three business days.

3. Michigan English Test (MET)

The MET is a flexible assessment widely recognized in the U.S. and Latin America, gaining international acceptance. It tests general English proficiency and is ideal for those using English in work or educational settings. The MET can be taken online or at designated test centers.

Revised Score Requirements for Existing Tests

Australia is also updating score requirements for several well-known English tests to ensure fairness. The revised benchmarks apply to:

  • PTE Academic
  • C1 Advanced
  • OET (Occupational English Test)
  • TOEFL iBT

If you have completed one of these tests, review your scores against the new criteria. Please note that the C1 Advanced test is no longer accepted as a requirement for Vocational English. Applicants for visa subclasses that require only Vocational English must select a different test.

Minimum Scores Required for Competent English (Test by Test)

For those applying for an Australian visa that requires a Competent English level, the following are the minimum scores required for each approved test. You must achieve the minimum score in all four components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Test Listening Reading Writing Speaking
IELTS 6 6 6 6
PTE Academic 47 48 51 54
C1 Advanced 163 163 170 179
TOEFL iBT 16 16 19 19
OET 290 310 290 330
CELPIP General 7 7 7 7
LANGUAGECERT Academic 57 60 64 70
MET 56 55 57 48

These minimum scores are mandatory. Falling short in any skill area could affect your visa application.

Final Thoughts

Australia is expanding opportunities for visa applicants while simultaneously raising the standards. Choose your English test wisely, prepare thoroughly, and ensure your scores meet the updated requirements. This proactive approach can streamline your journey to living or working in Australia.
