Assistant Librarian at the University of Ghana

People who meet the qualifications are invited to apply to be: ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN

JOB ROLE

Without removing anything from the duties of the specific unit to which the Assistant Librarian will be assigned, the job requires operational support for the University of Ghana Library System’s goals and strategic plan (UGLS). Among these are:

  • Telling people at the university about the library’s resources.
  • Teaching people how to use libraries and find information.
  • Using the right software or tool to get students and teachers involved in order to improve teaching and learning.
  • Giving academic departments help with their research.
  • Making a difference in the field through research and writing.
  • Making a difference in the field through extension activities.
  • Giving users access to information.
  • Doing what a subject librarian does.
  • Watching the shelves.

Qualifications and Experience

To apply, a person must:

  • Be an employee of the University of Ghana and have worked there for at least two years at the Senior Library Assistant level or higher.
  • Have a good first degree and a research master’s degree of at least a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or equivalent in Librarianship, Information Studies, Library Studies, or a related field, as well as at least two years of relevant work experience after getting their second degree.
  • The applicants must show proof that they are chartered members of a professional library association, such as the Ghana Library Association (GLA), and have been members for at least two years.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities that are needed are:

  • The ability to talk to references.
  • Able to come up with useful search strategies.
  • Able to do searches in the literature.
  • Be able to teach library classes.
  • Know how to catalog and organize library materials
  • Know how to stack and read shelves.
  • Have good relationships with other people.
  • The focus must be on the user.
  • Be able to keep to the professional standards of a librarian.
  • Know-how about how to do research
  • Familiarity with the MS Office Suite
  • Applicants must have good oral and written communication skills, be able to work well with others, and be able to understand and get along with coworkers.
  • Familiarity with computer programs and library management systems

The application pack should be sent as a single PDF file, and it should include:

  • A completed application form for Senior Level Administrative Positions (UAB Form 1C), which can be downloaded from the University’s website at www.ug.edu.gh/hrodd.
  • A curriculum vitae and cover letter that talk about the qualifications for the job, evidence of how well you teach, and evidence of your scholarship, such as publications.
  • A statement of about 2,500 words (but no more than five pages) about how you plan to use your time in office to deal with important issues.
  • Information on how to reach three references
