Assistant Grower job with Salary of $20 – $25 an hour in Washington County
Full Job Description
For the 2023 growing season in East Calais, Vermont, we are looking for a person with a lot of drive to join our team of organic herb farmers. This is a full-time seasonal job from May to October, but there may be fewer hours during the rest of the year. As we move into the winter months, this job could start right away for the right person.
The assistant grower will work closely with our farm manager to make sure that our weekly farm goals are met in the best way possible. The right candidate will be able to see the big picture while keeping their attention on the day-to-day tasks. On a beautiful organic family herb farm in Northern Vermont, where I work, things move quickly and are a lot of fun.
On 50 acres of land, we grow about 25 different medicinal herbs, which we then dry and process on-site. A good candidate for this job would have a lot of experience farming and be very comfortable driving tractors with 20–150 HP and using a wide range of tools.
The assistant grower will have to do the following:
Tractor work: Spreading compost and manure, transplanting, seeding cover crops and herb crops, precision cultivating, mowing, harvesting, using pallet forks and buckets, tillage, some work in the woods, and general tractor operation every day are all part of tractor work.
Machinery maintenance: Changing the oil in tractors and smaller engines, fixing broken tools and broken machinery on site, welding, and doing some basic fabrication on site would be a big plus, picking up parts and equipment (you must have a valid driver’s license)
Crop work: helping with harvests, working with the field crew, loading and unloading herb dryers, cleaning harvesting equipment, milling dried herbs, shipping pallets, loading and unloading deliveries and shipments (sometimes after hours), and doing irrigation work as needed.
Most of the people on our farm crew are from Mexico and don’t speak much English. Some basic Spanish is preferred, and it would help a lot at work if people could talk to each other in Spanish.
The pay is competitive and depends on how much experience you have and how hard you work. This job in farming is fast-paced, profitable, and diversified. It also requires a lot of attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
Pay is between $20 and $25 per hour
