ARISE GHANA DEMO AND MATTERS ARISING
THE ARISE GHANA COALITION
“Arise Ghana” is a coalition of patriotic and concerned Ghanaians from various political parties as well as citizens from all spheres of life. On the 28th of June 2022, there was an “Arise Ghana Demonstration “ at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle. This was after this new coalition called “Arise Ghana” announced that they were going to embark on a huge Demonstration in a bid to request a better ruling from N.P.P.
The leaders of this coalition expressed concern about the economic hardship, taxes, land grabbing, and the high cost of fuel in the country. They insisted that the government needs to rise to action as they are gradually making Ghana a failed country.
THE DEMO
Arise Ghana officially began its demonstration on the 28th of June. Unfortunately, their demo on the first day ended with a violent clash between the protesters and the police. The police released tear gas at these protesters while the protesters also threw stones at the police.
The police also employed the use of a water cannon because some of the protesters were burning tires in the middle of the road. This chaos was all a result of the protests not following the route ordered by the court and the police.
MATTERS ARISING
On the 28th of June, after the above incident, the police released an update on the issue. They stated that 29 protesters have been arrested for participating in violent attacks on the police as well as other members of the public. Also, video footage of the event is being reviewed in order to identify all other persons involved in the demo and the violent attacks.
They also further stated that the organizers of this Demonstration will be fished out and arrested and brought before the court to face justice. Though some officers and protesters were injured, the police state that they are receiving treatment. The police finally concluded by assuring the public that they are committed to discharging their constitutional mandate and hence will do their best to enforce law and order in the country.
Furthermore, despite this chaos, Arise Ghana has decided to stage Day 2 of their protest. However, Martin Kpebu, a private legal practice disclosed in an interview that the police were wrong for ordering a change of route for the protesters.
According to him, the organizers of the demonstration filed a stay of elution where the High Court Judge ordered that their demonstration shouldn’t go beyond 4 pm, yet should start at 8 am, converging at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and moving through Farisco and TIC to the Independence Square.
He claims that the police should have appealed to the judge if the demonstration affects national security. He states that the police had no power to determine whether the protest was a threat or not. Nonetheless, these DEMO organizers have decided to stage a final protest as was initially intended.
