Aquaya Institute Invites Job Applications

The Aquaya Institute (Aquaya) is an independent, non-profit research and consulting organization dedicated to safe, equitable, and sustainable water and sanitation in low-resource settings. Our mission is to improve public health by reducing the burden of waterborne diseases. Aquaya was established in 2005 to provide development agencies, governments, and implementing organizations with a trustworthy and agile resource for conducting rigorous research, experimentation, and evaluation.

Aquaya has completed projects spanning public health, economics, technology development, and social entrepreneurship in over 20 countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. We have published or contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed research articles and produced numerous other reports and publications.

Aquaya maintains an office in Nairobi, Kenya. Staff members are also located in the US, France, Ghana, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Morocco. Many of our projects are carried out in collaboration with academic research groups and expert consultants.

POSITION: Program/Research Manager

Job Role

This position will be based in Ghana or Kenya and will require extensive domestic travel within the country of location, and international travel across sub-Saharan Africa.

Details of Program

The Manager is anticipated to initially contribute to one of the following projects:

  • Urban Resilience by Building and Applying New Evidence in WASH (URBAN WASH), core project, Enabling Environments
  • URBAN WASH Buy-In, Improving Water Quality Management, Water Equity, and Non-Revenue Water in Ghana

URBAN WASH, Enabling Environments

Kenya is a pioneer with respect to formalizing small-scale water providers, which presents an opportunity to examine (through implementation research) aspects of formalization that relate to water safety. Our most promising opportunity currently lies with Nairobi Water, which is interested in having a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with URBAN WASH to explore a research collaboration.

The water safety plan (WSP) that they are currently undertaking is unique in that it explicitly considers small-scale providers operating in their service area. To our knowledge, utilities do not usually consider small-scale providers in their WSP, as they usually view them as illegal or competing with their services.

In Kenya, WASREB’s recent guidelines mandate regulated utilities to oversee small-scale providers, which establishes a backbone for WSPs to be more inclusive. Assuming the MOU moves forward (Q1-Q2 of Y2), URBAN WASH will i) take part in risk assessment activities that relate to small-scale providers, ii) co-design a response to identified risks with utility staff (for example, this could entail incentivizing regular water quality monitoring and treatment among small-scale providers), iii) support Nairobi Water to pilot this initiative, and iv) evaluate its success.

URBAN WASH Buy-In

The primary purpose of the Ghana Field Support Buy-in is to conduct initial assessments, design and conduct an implementation research program, and pilot interventions to improve water supply quality, equity, and non-revenue water as well as the overall reliability of domestic water services in the target cities in Northern Ghana.

This activity will culminate in a report on the research findings intended for USAID/Ghana and Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to support evidence-based decision-making and scale up of learnings. Aquaya will focus on water supply quality (monitoring, water safety plans, contamination) and water equity (affordability, underserved populations, willingness-to-pay), and will lead an intervention based on the results.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Manager will be responsible for managing project activities, including, but not limited to:
