American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship 2026

For visionary international students dedicated to creating social impact, a premier opportunity for a fully funded US undergraduate education is now open. American University has officially launched its Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) for the Fall 2026 intake. This highly competitive program is designed for future leaders who plan to use their education in the United States to drive positive civic and social change in their home communities.

A Transformative Financial Award

This scholarship provides one of the most comprehensive funding packages available for international undergraduates. The program awards:

  • Two Full Scholarships: These cover all billable expenses, including full tuition, room, and board for four years of study, subject to maintaining satisfactory academic progress.
  • Up to Eight Partial Scholarships: Valued at up to US$40,000 per year, these are awarded to additional outstanding candidates. There is no separate application for these partial awards; all eligible EGLS applicants are automatically considered.

Important Note: The scholarship does not cover non-billable costs. All recipients should budget approximately US$4,000 per year for expenses like health insurance, books, and travel. Partial scholarship awardees may need to demonstrate proof of additional funds.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate?

This scholarship seeks students who are both academically excellent and deeply committed to service. You are an excellent candidate if you:

  • Are an international student requiring an F-1 or J-1 visa to study in the United States.
  • Have a demonstrated record of leadership, volunteerism, and community service.
  • Come from an underrepresented or underserved socioeconomic background and/or have overcome significant challenges.
  • Will graduate from secondary school in or before June 2026 and will begin your first university studies at AU.
  • Meet AU’s English language proficiency requirements.

You are not eligible if you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or dual citizen, or if you have already begun any post-secondary studies.

The Critical Two-Step Application Process

Securing this scholarship requires the meticulous completion of two applications by the same strict deadline

Step 1: Apply for Admission to American University

  • Submit the Common Application along with all required supporting documents (transcripts, test scores, etc.) for undergraduate admission.

Step 2: Submit the AU EGLS Scholarship Application

  • After submitting the Common App, you must complete the separate AU EGLS Scholarship application and essays through your applicant portal.

Application Deadline: The absolute deadline for both steps is January 15, 2026. Since you cannot complete Step 2 without Step 1, starting the process early is essential. Finalists will be notified by April 1, 2026.

How to Craft a Winning Application

Your application must powerfully tell your unique story. Your essays should go beyond academic achievements to highlight your personal journey, the challenges you’ve overcome, and your concrete vision for community impact. Clearly articulate how your leadership experiences have shaped you and how a specific major at American University will equip you with the skills to execute your plans for change upon returning home.

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is more than a financial award; it is an investment in your potential as a future global leader. By showcasing a compelling blend of academic merit, proven leadership, and a clear commitment to social change, you can compete for this life-changing opportunity.
