POSITION: Postdoctoral Fellow – System Agronomist

About the Position
The Multifunctional Landscape Research Lever at the Alliance is looking for a proactive Postdoctoral Fellow – System Agronomist to engage in a diverse range of topics, emphasizing modeling, data science, and evidence synthesis. The role entails designing, implementing, and supporting activities aimed at optimizing agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, irrigation, and mechanization, alongside managing soil and water resources and performing large-scale data analytics in Ghana and West Africa.
The ideal candidate will incorporate climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, including sustainable agricultural practices, integrated soil fertility management, improved cropping systems, and landscape management, with the objective of developing resilient systems that maximize resource efficiency and enhance farming profitability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, test, and advocate for climate-smart agricultural practices and technologies to enhance farming system intensification and diversification while meeting sustainable production goals.
- Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to integrate agronomic, socio-economic, and environmental data, conducting comprehensive analyses to boost farming sustainability and profitability.
- Co-create and implement demand-driven approaches for integrated crop management practices, ensuring effective collaboration with key stakeholders.
- Contribute to projects focusing on soil, water, and landscape management, ensuring strategic planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting.
- Foster relationships with external stakeholders and internal partners, providing project updates, tracking progress, and managing expectations on deliverables.
- Prepare and share technical reports, research papers, and policy briefs to communicate findings to varied audiences, including scientists, policymakers, and the media.
- Collaborate with CGIAR centers and regional initiatives, such as the West Africa Soil Hub, to support soil health efforts and integrate activities across the region.
- Offer targeted training and technical support to farmers, extension workers, private sector partners, and other stakeholders on sustainable and climate-smart farming practices.
Qualifications and Experience Required
- A PhD in soil and water management, agronomy, geography, ecology, or a related field, with over 10 years of experience.
- Strong expertise in research design, execution, data collection, analysis, visualization, and scientific writing, particularly in modeling and machine learning methodologies.
- Demonstrated proficiency in advanced quantitative analysis tools, including R, Python, and other qualitative data analysis software.
- A solid track record of leadership and management in soil fertility, landscape management, and climate-smart agriculture research.
- Excellent command of English, both in writing and speaking, especially in scientific communication and report preparation.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and prioritization capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to take initiative and work under pressure.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to function effectively within a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and multicultural team.
Terms of Employment
This role is internationally recruited, and based in Accra, Ghana. The initial contract duration is two years, subject to a six-month probation period, and may be renewed based on performance and availability of resources.
The position is classified at the BG08 level, with a minimum annual salary of USD 44,248, on a scale from BG01 to BG14 (with BG14 being the highest level in the Alliance classification system).
