A Full Guide on Australia DAMA Visa | Step-by-Step Insights

If you are disappointed by the stringent eligibility requirements for Australian visas, we have some good news for you. You may be surprised to learn that there is an Australian visa that provides a great deal of flexibility and reductions on eligibility requirements. Yes, a DAMA or Designated Area Migration Agreement visa offers more flexibility in terms of requirements than other ordinary visas. As a result, you should consider applying for a DAMA visa in Australia.

But first, what exactly is a DAMA visa, and how does it work?

The Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) is an official agreement between the Australian government and regional governments in Australia. This agreement aims to boost local economies by introducing international skilled workers to regional Australia. Furthermore, it intends to address Australia’s regional skill and labour shortages.

“The DAMA initiative is an important component of the government’s strategy to address the skills needs of regional Australia, where firms are struggling to fill crucial positions. DAMAs allow areas to adjust the skilled migration program to their own conditions.” Alex Hawke, Minister of Immigration.

The Australian government is currently prioritizing visas for regional Australia in order to boost economic growth in these areas. As a result, this is an excellent opportunity for individuals wanting to relocate to Australia in 2024. But wait a minute. I would urge that you first grasp the DAMA visa and then make your decisions appropriately. Read this blog post to learn more about a DAMA agreement, eligibility conditions, and how to apply for this visa. Let’s start with the basics and define a DAMA visa.

What is the DAMA Visa?

The Designated Area Migration Agreement, or DAMA, is a two-tiered scheme that primarily serves regional areas. Its first level indicates an agreement between the Australian Government and regional leaders. The first level is a five-year primary contract with the local representative.

The second level is an agreement between workers and employers based on the terms of the primary agreement for that particular region. These agreements are between the Australian government and employers in regional Australia. The following visa types fall under the DAMA program:

  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Subclass 494)
  • Temporary Skill Shortage visa (Subclass 482)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)

Following a basic grasp of a DAMA, the following issue is why you should select a DAMA visa above other normal Australian visa choices. Let us find out.

Why Should You Choose a DAMA Visa?

Choosing a DAMA visa is the ideal option for a variety of reasons. These include:

  • An Australian DAMA visa has more flexible eligibility conditions than other Australian visas.
  • The regional administration does not impose severe measures, which allows you to quickly obtain a DAMA visa.
  • The goal of DAMA agreements is to address the country’s skills shortage, therefore if your talents match those of qualifying occupations, this is an excellent chance for you.
  • If you travel to Australia on a DAMA visa, you can obtain permanent residency after the allowed time period.
  • A DAMA visa also allows you to work in occupations that are not listed in Australia’s conventional migration program.
  • Some occupations on a DAMA visa provide English language benefits.
  • The DAMA agreement employs a number of risk and integrity safeguards to ensure the preservation of employers’ and workers’ rights.

Who is eligible for a DAMA visa?

Employers and employees in specific regional areas are eligible for DAMA. Employers must obtain approval before sponsoring skilled personnel. Workers, on the other hand, must have qualifications and experience that are appropriate for the roles being advertised. There are currently 12 DAMA, each with a particular list of approved occupations and qualifications. The agreements are:

  • Orana, NSW
  • Pilbara, WA
  • South West, WA
  • East Kimberley, WA
  • The Goldfields, WA
  • Townsville, QLD
  • Goulburn Valley, VIC
  • Great South Coast, VIC
  • Northern Territory, NT
  • South Australia Regional, SA
  • Far North Queensland, QLD
  • Adelaide City Technology and Innovation Advancement, SA

Application Process for a DAMA Visa

The application procedure for a DAMA visa consists of several steps, all of which must be understood in order for the visa application to be successful. These steps include:

1. Document preparation.

First, establish that you are eligible to apply for a DAMA visa. Then, gather all the supporting documents needed to fill out the DAR endorsement or variation request application form. Remember that the required documentation and application process are identical for both DAR endorsement and Variation request.

2. DAR Endorsement or Variation Request.

If you apply for a skilled migrant visa through the DAMA program, a Designated Area Representative (DAR) will review your abilities and qualifications. The DAR can nominate you for visas under the Labor Agreement stream category.

So, the employer will request for a DAR endorsement using the official skilled and business migration portal. The Designated Area Representative will evaluate your abilities and offer a letter of recommendation. Furthermore, the DAR is responsible for notifying the Department of Home Affairs.

3. Labour Agreement Request

The Employer provides the Department of Home Affairs with a DAMA Labour Agreement or Variation Request. After assessing the application, the Department of Home Affairs informs the employer of the outcome.

4. Nomination Application

If the labour agreement or variation request is granted, the employer will submit a nomination application to the Department of Home Affairs. Once the occupation has been nominated, you can apply for a DAMA visa for that occupation. Before applying for a DAMA visa, study the terms and conditions and criteria, and prepare all required documents.

Fee for a DAMA visa

There are no fees or charges for the following stages of the application process:

  • DAR permission for entering South Australia’s DAMAs
  • To request a labour agreement variation.
  • Signing a contract of employment with the Commonwealth.

In addition, the visa applicant or employer must pay fees and taxes for the following services:
  • To the Department of Home Affairs for a nomination application.
  • To the Department of Education, Skills, and Employment (DESE), for the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy.
  • To the Department of Home Affairs for a work visa application.
  • To professionals and experts for obtaining proof and records.

So there you have it: a comprehensive overview of DAMA visa requirements, the application process, visa costs, and supplementary fees. Now, what comes next? It’s obviously time to take a practical move toward obtaining a DAMA visa. But how you do it is the important question. I would recommend seeking expert assistance in this case.
