On behalf of the Governing Council, the Search Committee for the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) invites applications from distinguished academic leaders for the position of Vice Chancellor. This pivotal role becomes vacant on 1 August 2026. We seek a visionary individual to guide this specialized university towards its ambitious goal of becoming a world-renowned center for excellence in mining, petroleum, technology, and related disciplines.

The Position and Its Leadership Scope

The Vice Chancellor serves as the Executive Head of the University, according to the University Statutes. This individual bears full responsibility for both the academic and administrative functions of the institution under the guidance of the University Council. Additionally, the Vice Chancellor acts as the Chief Disciplinary Officer.

Qualification Profile and Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate must be a Full Professor of international acclaim and a distinguished scholar within a relevant field. Beyond academic stature, the candidate must demonstrate exceptional leadership capabilities.

  • First, the candidate must exhibit a proven ability to provide strategic direction, identify opportunities, and implement a vision that aligns with the University’s Strategic Plan.
  • Moreover, the candidate must possess outstanding organisational skills and a high sense of ethical leadership with unblemished character.
  • The role also requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills, alongside a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
  • Crucially, the candidate must be a business-oriented visionary capable of forging strong, productive partnerships between the university and relevant industries.
  • Another key requirement is a demonstrated capacity to attract, raise, and manage funds for research and institutional development.
  • Finally, the candidate must be able to complete a full four-year term before reaching the compulsory retirement age of sixty.

Terms of Appointment

This is a full-time appointment. The initial term is four years, with the possibility of renewal for a further term based on performance. The position offers a highly competitive remuneration package and conditions of service commensurate with this senior executive role in academia.
