The scholarship supports exceptional students in reaching their academic goals at a top university in Europe, located in the lively and culturally diverse city of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Qualified Master’s Programs
Students may apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) upon acceptance into one of the following full-time LL.M. programs at the University of Amsterdam:
- International and European Legislation
- European Civil Law
- Jurisprudence & Economics
- International Criminal Legislation.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the AMS 2026, applicants need to fulfill these criteria:
- Possess a non-EU/EEA passport and be ineligible for Dutch financial support (Studiefinanciering).
- Be applying to a Master’s program at UvA for the first time (candidates with an existing UvA master’s degree are not qualified).
- Satisfy all Dutch visa criteria as specified by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).
- Be registered as a full-time student for the academic year 2026–2027.
Criteria for Selection
The committee assesses submissions according to academic excellence and enthusiasm. The main evaluation criteria consist of:
- Academic Achievement: Comparable to a 4.0 GPA (USA), First Class Honours (UK), or an 8.0 (Netherlands).
- Motivation Letter (max 500 words): Describing your program choice, your future aspirations, and the reasons you qualify for the AMS.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): Highlighting your educational accomplishments, extracurricular involvement, and work experience.
- General standard of your LLM application.
- Form for application.
Chronology of Applications
Applications for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) 2026 open on 1 December 2025 and close on 15 January 2026 (23:59 CET). Applicants should submit both their LLM and AMS applications by this deadline.
The Amsterdam Law School Selection Committee will announce results at a later date. Successful candidates must complete their University of Amsterdam enrollment by 1 September 2026 to remain eligible.
