New Zealand Work Visa 2025: Updated Job Checks & Police Clearance Rules

Around 90 new occupations across skill levels 1 to 3 will be added, potentially benefiting some roles at levels 4 and 5. This change will provide workers with a pathway to extend their maximum stay under the AEWV.
To ease the transition, INZ will introduce a temporary Specific Purpose Work Visa (SPWV) from September 8 to November 2. This short-term visa will cater to approximately 30 of the new NOL roles, but eligibility will be strict. Applicants must:
- Already hold an AEWV that expires by November 30, 2025
- Be employed in one of the eligible roles
- Have three years of relevant experience or a recognized qualification
While recruitment advertising will not be necessary for the SPWV, employers must follow the standard AEWV process once the NOL update is implemented.
3. New Police Clearance Requirements for Indian Nationals
One of the most significant changes impacts Indian nationals applying from India. From December 1, INZ will only accept police clearance certificates (PCCs) issued by the Regional Passport Office of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Previously, applicants could submit certificates from local police stations or district offices, but that option will no longer be available.
This new requirement specifically affects Indian nationals residing in India. Those living abroad and non-Indian nationals with time spent in India will not be impacted. Applicants in India should anticipate longer wait times to obtain the required documents, which is essential for planning their application timelines.
