Cambodia Revises e-Visa Rules: Entry Limited to Airports and Selected Borders

Cambodia has made important changes to its e-Visa policy, primarily due to ongoing tensions at its border with Thailand. As a result, travelers can now only enter the country through specific international points. This adjustment aims to enhance security while ensuring that tourists can still visit Cambodia.

Closure of Two Land Crossings

Cambodia’s e-Visa usually offers a quick and convenient way for travelers to enter the country. However, recent security issues have led to significant changes in access points. As of August 19, 2025, the following two land crossings with Thailand are closed for e-Visa holders:

  • Cham Yeam (Koh Kong Province)
  • Poipet (Banteay Meanchey Province)

Currently, travelers with an e-Visa cannot use these crossings to enter Cambodia.

Where e-Visa Holders Can Enter

At this time, e-Visa holders can only enter Cambodia through specific airports and land crossings, which include:

  • Phnom Penh Techo International Airport (KTI)
  • Siem Reap International Airport (SAI)
  • Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS)
  • Bavet land crossing (border with Vietnam)
  • Tropaeng Kreal land crossing (border with Laos)

Notably, Phnom Penh’s new Techo International Airport fully replaced the old Phnom Penh International Airport on September 8, 2025. All civil flights now operate from KTI, making it fully valid for e-Visa entry. Exiting Cambodia is straightforward. e-Visa holders can leave through any open international checkpoint.

Travel Advisories and Safety Warnings

Many governments still caution against non-essential travel to Cambodia’s border areas with Thailand due to ongoing security concerns. While the e-Visa restrictions are clear, it remains uncertain if these closures also apply to travelers with visas issued by Cambodian embassies or consulates.

Important Tips for Travelers

If you plan to visit Cambodia using an e-Visa, stick to the designated airports and land borders with Vietnam and Laos. Avoid overland travel from Thailand, particularly through the closed Poipet or Cham Yeam crossings. The situation continues to evolve; therefore, always check the official Cambodian e-Visa website and your government’s travel advisory before you depart.

Conclusion

These updates to Cambodia’s e-Visa rules reflect the country’s commitment to ensuring visitor safety while navigating complex border issues. Travelers can still enjoy the beauty of Cambodia, but they must stay informed about current entry points and safety advisories.

By preparing accordingly, you can have a smooth and enjoyable trip to this vibrant destination.
