US Require In-Person Interviews for H1-B and F-1 Visa Applicants Starting September 2025

Starting September 2, 2025, the US will require most non-immigrant visa applicants to attend in-person interviews. This change marks a significant shift in the visa application process. The US has updated the interview waiver list, impacting many applicants.

Overview of the New Requirements

Under the new regulations, most applicants for H-1B and F-1 visas must now appear in person for interviews. Previously, individuals under 14 and over 79 were often exempt from this requirement. However, starting in September, they will need to attend unless they qualify for specific exemptions. Only certain B1/B2 visa holders will retain the Interview Waiver benefit.

If you currently hold an H-1B or F-1 visa and your previous visa expired within the last 12 months, you will not qualify for the Interview Waiver. This means you will have to participate in an in-person interview when applying for a new visa.

Mandatory Face-to-Face Interviews

Beginning September 2025, most applicants will need to meet with a consular officer in person. Exceptions include:

  • Candidates under the A-1, A-2, or C-3 visa categories (excluding attendants or personal workers of accredited officials).
  • Applicants who were at least 18 years old when their previous visa was issued. They can apply for a B-1, B-2, or Border Crossing Card within one year of their visa’s expiration.
  • This means that if you are renewing a B1/B2 visa within a year of expiration and were at least 18 when it was issued, you may still be eligible for an interview waiver.

To qualify for the interview waiver, applicants must have never faced a visa denial. They should also have no evident or potential ineligibility issues. Additionally, they must be renewing a fully valid B-1, B-2, or B1/B2 visa.

Increased Visa Fees

In tandem with the new interview policy, the US will also raise visa fees significantly. Non-petition-based visa fees, including F-1 and F-2 student visas, will increase by over 148%. The current fee of $185 for non-petition-based non-immigrant visas will see a substantial hike.

Conclusion

The upcoming changes to the US visa application process will impact many applicants, requiring them to attend in-person interviews. While this move aims to enhance security, it introduces additional challenges for those seeking to study or work in the US. Stakeholders should prepare for these changes and stay informed about the evolving visa landscape.

The increase in fees further complicates the situation, making it essential for prospective applicants to plan accordingly.
