Overview of the Hyundai Motor Group Grant

In partnership with SOAS University of London, this scholarship initiative is designed to support gifted individuals from Africa in areas vital for sustainable development. Hyundai Motor Group is investing in Africa’s future leaders with the overarching goal of generating lasting impact throughout the continent.

The initiative offers opportunities for academic achievement and a distinct community of scholars, alumni, and Hyundai executives, focusing on enabling students to address global issues and promote progress in Africa.

Moreover, master’s students can apply for a Junior Internship Program introduced at SOAS as part of the scholarship project.

Program Opportunities 

Awards Available: 5 scholarships (4 designated for Master’s candidates, 1 for a PhD candidate)

Qualifying Departments: 

  • College of Economic Development and Finance
  • School of Law, Anthropology, and Political Science

Acceptable Programs: 

  • Any full-time Master’s program (1 year) commencing in 2025/26.
  • Any full-time PhD (MPhil/PhD) research initiative commencing in 2025/26

(Note: Programs that are part-time or span 2 years for a Master’s degree do not qualify).

Scholarships Benefits

The Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship provides full tuition coverage for master’s students, and any leftover funds from the total grant of £27,730 are given as a stipend to assist with living expenses. PhD students will be granted complete tuition coverage for three years, in addition to the writing-up fee for the fourth year, and will receive an annual stipend of £22,780, distributed in termly payments.

Along with financial assistance, scholars receive unique access to networking events and seminars organized by Hyundai, chances for alumni engagement after their studies, and the possibility to apply for a Junior Internship Program at SOAS.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of an African country and typically living in Africa.
  • Must be an incoming international student (paying international tuition) for the 2025/26 entry.
  • Academic Excellence:
    • Master’s Applicants: Must possess or anticipate a first-class honour (or comparable top-tier qualification). A 2:1 might be considered but will not be favoured.
      PhD Candidates: Should possess or anticipate a Distinction-level Master’s degree (or a similarly high-ranking equivalent). Individuals with Merit can apply, but they will not be given priority.
  • Applicants must:
    • Submit your application to SOAS prior to applying for the scholarship.
    • Satisfy English language standards by the time the panel gathers.
  • Obtain an unconditional offer by the time you determine scholarship outcomes.

Application Timelines

  • Deadline for Applications: All scholarship applications need to be submitted by 12:00 pm (noon), 25 April 2025 (UK local time).
  • Proposal Criteria: Applicants need to possess an unconditional offer for their course when the scholarship committee convenes (approximately June 2025).
  • Results Update: We will reach out to Successful applicants initially in June. Notifications will be sent out once we assign all awards.
