The Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM) at Université de Tunis, in collaboration with prestigious partners such as Forum Transregionale Studien, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Universität Leipzig, and the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), proudly announces the launch of its highly esteemed MECAM Fellowships for the academic year 2025-2026.

This exceptional program is designed for six outstanding postdoctoral scholars and three accomplished senior researchers, offering them the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in an enriching eight-month, fully funded research residency in the vibrant city of Tunis, Tunisia. Spanning from September 2025 to April 2026, the fellowship aims to foster innovative research and facilitate intellectual exchange within the rich cultural and academic landscape of the Maghreb region.

Selected fellows will benefit from a supportive environment that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, allowing them to contribute to and engage with ongoing research initiatives. Participants will have access to a network of distinguished scholars and researchers, further enhancing their academic experience while exploring the diverse historical, social, and political contexts of the Maghreb. Research Areas

Under the central theme “Imagining Futures: Addressing Disparity”, fellows will engage in research across one or more of MECAM’s five Interdisciplinary Research Areas (IRAs):

  • Aesthetics & Cultural Practice
  • Inequality & Mobility
  • Memory & Justice
  • Resources & Sustainability
  • Identities & Beliefs

This initiative promotes worldwide academic interaction and collaborative research across disciplines among researchers from the Maghreb, Middle East, Europe, and other regions.
