UK National Capabilities for Global Challenges Internships 2025

Applications are now LIVE for the esteemed National Capabilities for Global Challenges Internship Scheme 2025, providing an amazing chance for students and recent graduates to participate in pioneering environmental science research. Administered by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), this initiative encourages enthusiastic individuals to engage in meaningful projects tackling worldwide issues.

Furthermore, the program includes 8 distinct internships at UKCEH locations in Bangor, Edinburgh, Lancaster, and Wallingford, allowing the opportunity to apply for multiple positions.

Fundamental Details 

  • Internship Period: Monday, 30 June to Friday, 8 August 2025.
  • Application Due Date: Wednesday, 2 April 2025 (Apply soon to ensure you don’t miss it!).
  • Interview Duration: 30 April – 14 May 2025 (held online).
  • Work Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week throughout the internship period.
  • Stipend: £2,847 (before deductions) for the entire internship.

Eligibility Requirements

To submit an application, applicants need to fulfill these criteria:

  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student (including a Master’s or PhD) or have completed your studies within six months before the internship’s beginning (30 June 2025).
  • Possess the entitlement to reside and be employed in the UK throughout the internship duration.
  • Be capable of working 37 hours each week throughout the entire 6-week program.
  • Show effective communication, collaboration, and self-sufficient work abilities.
  • Submit a one-page report along with a brief testimonial upon finishing the internship.
  • Lastly, deliver results at a UKCEH event and feature in marketing materials.

Internship Locations and Projects

Here’s a glimpse of the thrilling internship options on offer:

1. Bangor (Gales): 

  • Project: Effect of Ozone Contamination on Forest Biodiversity
  • Responsibilities: Conducting literature reviews, analyzing spatial data (using GIS, R/Python), and writing reports.
  • Requirements: Background in environmental science, proficiency in GIS, knowledge of Python/R.

2. Edinburgh (Scotland): 

Project 1:Integrated Method for Environmental Modeling

  • Responsibilities: Developing the Basic Model Interface (BMI), creating coding tutorials, and documenting on GitHub.
  • Required Skills: Python, modeling, GitHub.

Program 2: Rehabilitation for Ecological Healing and Strength

  • Responsibilities: Ecological modeling, network analysis, and report composition.
  • Required Skills: R/Julia, ecological knowledge, interest in conservation.

Project 3: Identifying Canopy Phenology in Tropical Forests

  • Responsibilities: Analyzing satellite images, remote sensing tasks, and mapping canopy phenology.
  • Required Skills: GIS, R, GitHub, experience with satellite imagery.

3. Lancaster (England): 

  • Project: Dynamics of Nutrient Retention of Biochar in Malaysian Oil Palm Agriculture
  • Responsibilities: Laboratory experiments, soil testing, and research review.
  • Required Skills: Laboratory experience, understanding of soil biogeochemistry.

4. Wallingford (UK): 

Project 1: Factors Influencing Thunderstorm Frequency in India

  • Tasks: Analyzing data, evaluating statistics, and generating reports.
  • Required Skills: Python, statistical knowledge, interest in meteorology.

Program 2: Funding Sources and Training Requirements for Global Audiences

  • Activities: Market analysis, assessment of training requirements, and identification of partnerships.
  • Required Skills: Environmental science, global development.

Project 3: Functional Metrics of Plankton Through Imaging Flow Cytometry

  • Duties: Grouping images, creating open-source workflows, and analyzing data.
  • Required Skills: Python/R, machine learning expertise.
